I thought it was fake when I first saw it and I still do today.

If YOU think it's real, then by all means feel free to send it in to ANACS for third party grading and authentication.

We can debate this coin 'till the cows come home and opinions will still be all over the map.

Okay, yes it weighs 26.34g. That doesn't change the fact that it is simply not genuine.

If the weight were off, that would be an easy way to confirm that it's not genuine. But since the weight is acceptable, you have to rely on the multiple other indicators that point to this being a counterfeit.

The consensus of opinion here is that the coin is probably counterfeit. Remember, YOU have the luxury of having the coin in-hand while we are dealing with a multitude of pictures. We are basing our opinions on PICTURES and our experiences.

Since it was (or still is) your Grandfather's coin why don't you just send the coin in for authentication to ANACS, NGC or PCGS? (ANACS would be the most cost effective.)

At least then you'll know for sure the authenticity of the coin.

Good luck and please let us know the results when you get the coin back.

Some counterfeits are made from silver and will have the exact weight. Some counterfeits are made from other metals and the weight will be different. Weight is one of the tools used to determine if the coin is genuine or counterfeit. As you know there are a lot of counterfeits on the market and a lot of people get fooled by counterfeits. Take the coin to a local coin dealer and try to sell it. It will not cost you any money and you will get an opinion. If the coin is made from silver, it still has melt value.

Looks like you made a type on the 1971 CC, but if you have a 1871 CC Seated dollar post it as it is a rare coin.

I'm the only one here who thinks it might be real. But I wouldn't buy it because of all the damage. Don't bother getting it slabbed. Take it to a coin dealer and see what they'll offer for it. That's what I did with my dad's estate coins. The modern proof sets were worth piffle unless they contained gold or silver, and they were ALL real.

Thq, I am with you. This coin looks real to me and the date matches OC-8 die marriage. It is hard to tell because images are too blurry to see the detail to confirm. I would suggest, like others have stated, go to your local coin store or send to a TPG for confirmation.
