Have you noticed the unusual amount of "pimples' on both the obverse and reverse along with an overall grainy appearance and mushy details. Better check this coin thoroughly because it may only be worth its weight in copper or some other base metal. Looks to me as if it could be a spark erosion counterfeit.

For those interested in my experiment.. I put it on ebay, for starting bid of $0.99.. I think I listed it honestly, and was quite interested to see if it would even hit melt. It sold for $27 plus shipping, so quite happy with this. and will buy a nicer one someday. |

Excellent result! I do think however that you got lucky with the Peace dollar craze on ebay these days. People are snapping up these coins like candy. |

Going back a step, what is causing the Peace dollar craze right now? Is it the same with others, e.g. Morgans, WL Halves etc. I hadn't noticed. Edited by silverexile

Most collectibles have been selling for more than they are worth. People have extra cash and are buying collectibles (comic books, coins, currency, etc)

I concur, the anniversary of the Peace and Morgan this year is causing firms to hoard as many 1921 issues as they can get to include with the new coins in a promotional set and driving prices up. Also just the increased demand for silver coins and bullion lately have caused prices to rise. Sometimes I look at coins in a local pawn shop. Last week he had well circulated (VG-F) Morgans and common Peace dollars at $36 each. This week they bumped them to $38. And for impaired silver eagles they bumped the price from $33 up to $44. I can find nicer certified examples for just a little more, but people are buying them anyway! |
