Those coins are a natural toning. I agree with you about no value from your collecting perspective. Toning collecting is very specific.

I will try to dismember this set. The penny show some PVC contamination. The 5 cent has a superb toning. The rest of the coins show air flow toning. what good news for those coins it is I do not see Sulphur contamination, which is good. You has to understand that the toning it is just surface color change due to the self material protection against corrosion, it is not oxide, it is a base.

Toning collector will like them.

Grape - Interesting topic - I wouldn't have given this set a second look ordinarily, but even after all this faff, even $22 wouldn't justify the cost of busting this out and cashing in.

No, $22 wouldn't justify the cost, but at $18 it would based off the current markets if you were purely looking at it from a retail perspective. But if I was buying a set like this to own I'd have no issue at $25

That half doesn't look half bad to me. The large spots on the quarter's obverse are too much for me and the toning isn't strong enough on the others to be of much note...in my opinion.

@silviosi that's an insane premium! I'd be happy with $5 for this dime haha

@spruett001 Thanks! in hand the reverse on the half looks really sweet, and the nickel looks .

Here is my Two Cents ,The cent and nickel are nice except for the spotting. The rest are melt worthy,IMHO.

Hmm another hot topic on the forum . I wouldn't buy as a full proof set unless the price was just melt . As everyone says the cent and Nickel are the ones to take into consideration . Eye appeal of the Dime, Quarter and Half are in my opinion is about 3/10 .
I might have experimented with just the Dime but that would be another topic .

Just the happy kid in a numismatic wonderland...I'd gladly hand over 2X melt for the set if I saw it in a local coin shop. It's a fun set.

Try to take the pictures again, more straight on, but with a tissue filter on the light to diffuse it, this should get the straight on shot, and color pop you're looking to get.

Make sure the lamp doesn't get hot, hot, though or there might be a fire, but diffusing the light should make the toning "pop' without having to get to the harsh angles to display it.

I don't know why people are so against toning, it's the natural progression of metal over time, it's normal, and you can fight it, but it's gonna happen eventually.
Anyways, Nice, genuine surfaces on 60 year old coins. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Plenty of dipped coins out there to compete against is my guess though, and I guess people like dipped coins better. LOL!

Toning or not toning, the ongoing battle of the century.

@John1 thank you! Cents or Sense. Or scents. All appreciated

@T-BOP ty for your thoughts. As well curious what do you mean you might had experiment with dime further? I'm thinking ya mean probe for value higher than melt?

@ijn1944 That's how I felt when I saw them hahaha. Entered the numismatic wonderland ty for thoughts!

Thanks! @Big-Kingdom Indeed I'll need to configure my setup and get some practice in to get coins like this photo'd in 2 shots lol
I'll give it a try though wile diffusing.
Also I don't think peeps here are against toning. At least what I've gathered is, that since the toning doesn't add much value in general, these coins wouldn't have any premium as the condition is first deciding factor.
I'm fairly content opening up that envelope to these coins rather than a set of dipped proofs
