The Maryland State Seal is depicted on the reverse of the 1934 Founding of the Province of Maryland Tercentenary commemorative half dollar. The coin earns its "sea legs" for this thread via the Maryland Seal.

Per Maryland law, the Seal has two supporters, a plowman (on the viewer's left) and a fisherman (right). The fisherman is described as follows:

(vi) a fisherman wearing a knitted cap somewhat resembling a stocking cap and holding one side of the shield with his right hand and in his left hand a fish that is not specific to any species;

With the maritime industry being a major component of Maryland's economy from its earliest days, it is not surprising to find it represented (via a fisherman) on the long-standing Seal of the State. (Maryland crab cake anyone?)

The 1935 Hudson, NY Sesquicentennial half dollar features an adaptation of the original City of Hudson, NY Seal on its reverse. The design presents Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, holding a trident and riding a spouting whale.

A trident is a three-pronged spear that can be used as a weapon or a tool for fishing. Its "Pieces of the Sea" connection rests in the fact that the trident is commonly associated with the mythical gods of the sea - Neptune and Poseidon.

Henry Hudson's sailing ship, the Halve Maen (in English, Half Moon), is depicted under full sail on the coin's obverse.
