This early 19th-century silver sixpenny token wins no prizes for condition but it shows London's oldest surviving outdoor statue. Charing Cross was originally the location of a 13th-century stone Gothic cross erected in memory of Queen Eleanor of Castille, wife of English King Edward I. The cross had become very dilapidated by the 17th century and it was replaced by an equestrian statue of reigning monarch King Charles I. Then came the Civil War and Charles I was deposed and beheaded in 1649, outside the Royal Banqueting Hall within sight of the statue. The Government under Cromwell sold the statue to a scrap merchant. There is a story that the scrap merchant made a fortune selling souvenirs that he claimed were made from the bronze of the statue. In 1660, when the monarchy was restored, the scrap merchant dug up the statue, which he had secretly buried, and gave it to King Charles II who restored it to its original position. Charing Cross gives its name to the nearby train station, opened in 1864, and the statue is the point from which distances to and from London are measured. (My photo of the statue. Trafalgar Square in the background).
