McPherson, after whom the county is named, which is outside the county courthouse. A career soldier, McPherson rose to the rank of Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War and died in service at the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 at age 35. McPherson never traveled to Kansas. Incidentally, McPherson was also featured on the $2 Treasury Note of 1891.
