@coinfrog. I really do need to spend some more time in figuring out how to really capture the luster. One day!

It's ok, I'm fine with low guesses and high guesses, and correct guesses! Reason for posting is to get an idea of how people evaluate the pics and get a wide array of opinions/thoughts/breakdowns, and compare that to just another opinion (the TPG's). Especially on this series! It's a tough series to grade! So many strike and die issues. Has made putting together a higher grade set very fun, challenging, and rewarding!

Another nice one. It's an interesting discussion piece for a subtle reason. It is MDS obverse and reverse, yet has minimal die clashing and polishing. Despite the lack of evident clashing and polishing, there is a fairly long obverse die crack from the third feather to the eye. (This is a common die crack on Buffs.) The strike is average for the date, and has slight peripheral strike weakness.

The obverse has some multi-directional scratches in the hair above the knot. There are a few minor contact flecks on the forehead and braid, an one on the lower cheek. The fields are superb. IMHO, these contacts are consistent with MS-65.

The reverse has one deeper small gouge above the buffalo's hump, quite a few small surface scratches on the shoulder and left rear leg, and two small scratches on the flank and one in the ground above the "N" of CENTS. IMHO, the reverse is MS-64.

It's just short of a bourse floor Gem BU, and I would net grade this coin to MS-64.

PCGS is all over the lot on late teen Philadelphia Buffs, including 1917. They rarely plus designate these dates. I have handled some real head-scratchers for 1917, including a full strike PCGS MS-63 that NGC slabbed at MS-66. I also have seen 1917 Buffs slabbed at MS-65 that were MS-63, tops. Don't be too surprised with PCGS coming in anywhere from 63 to 66 here. My best guess for PCGS is an undergrade at MS-63.

My friend, take that grade, run for the hills, and never crack it out. Congrats on the grade! Knowing your fantastic track record for snagging solid undervalued Buffs, I suspect you did well here.

Like I said, though, I wouldn't have been surprised with PCGS landing anywhere from 63 to 66, and so I'm not surprised by this PCGS grade. I don't see it the same way as PCGS, but that's why we all haggle on the bourse floors.

It is a nice coin. Nothing detracts from that, for sure. And it is interesting that it made it to MDS without heavy clashing and polishing, but still snagged the long die crack. That's quite an achievement for that die pair. Not many dies pulled that off!
