I don't know how I missed your last post Hfjacinto. Loving the 1815 400 (480) reis and the history behind it. Your collection is looking good. Well done.

Thanks Triggersmob!
I have another one coming and I have a few on watch list. I may have to go to Portugal soon and have 2 on the list that I found. Hopefully they are still available.

Quote: While I thought Aluminum-Bronze coins are rare, the current crop of 10, 20 and 50 cent Euro coins are Aluminum-Bronze (called Nordic Gold).
Aluminium bronzes are valued for their higher strength and corrosion resistance as compared to other bronze alloys. These alloys are tarnish-resistant and show low rates of corrosion in atmospheric conditions, low oxidation rates at high temperatures, and low reactivity with sulfurous compounds and other exhaust products of combustion. They are also resistant to corrosion in sea water. Hi. Nice to see someone here collecting Portuguese coins. I can explain the rarity of this ones. The old 1 escudo and 50 centavos coins were in reality copper-aluminum. It was supposed to be resistant and pretty. But they failed. The correct alloy was hard to work. Wore out dies quickly. It should have 915 parts copper and 85 parts aluminum, for better resistance. As was used in France and Germany then. In Portugal the mint reduced the aluminum to 50 parts to make the alloy cheaper and less hard. This caused the coins to oxidate and go dark quickly. Workers in the state mint protested to the government that the production of these coins shamed their workmanship. They were replaced after only three years. So your 50 centavos is in very good shape, congratulations. Few survived without going dark with oxidation.

@jecz79,
Thank you for the information!
To all my fellow collectors,
Elizabeth and I had to make a quick trip to Portugal as her father is getting up in age. As we were spending a few days with him, we made it into a short trip, so while in Lisboa I picked up a few coins, I still need to take pictures, but a few nice coins will be coming soon. And maybe a few pictures of Portugal.
