While most of the time in Portugal was planned, I had a few hours one day to kill. I knew of a coin shop in Coimbra, so I made a point to pass by, while the selection was more tailored to modern, her prices were low. BUT after getting one of the coins home, I discovered it was cleaned. I was pretty certain the one I picked was not cleaned, but don't know if she gave me the cleaned on by mistake. But its still one I did not have. Today's coin is 200 reis from 1909, this is only a 1 year issue. The coin. Issuer: Portugal King Manuel II (1908-1910) Type: Standard circulation coin Year : 1909 Value: 200 Reis Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Silver (.835) Weight: 5 g Diameter: 24 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM549 Mintage: 7,656,000

An attractive 200 reis coin. Unfortunate about the cleaning, though.

Might be cleaned, but I would still be happy to have that in my collection.

This was the 2nd coin I picked up from the coin shop in Coimbra. She had this priced as XF, even with the minor rim ding, it looks more like AU to me. This is 10 escudos from 1928. This coin commemorates the battle of Ourique in which took place on 25 July 1139. The forces of Portuguese count Afonso Henriques defeated the moors led by the Almoravid governor of Córdoba, Muhammad Az-Zubayr Ibn Umar. This was part of the reconquest of Portugal from the moors. This is the 2nd commemorative coin issued during the escudo era. The first was the 1 Escudo commemorating the forming of the republic in 1914 (dated 1914) The coin. Issuer: Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Circulating commemorative coin Year: 1928 Value: 10 Escudos (10 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.835) Weight: 12.5 g Diameter:30 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM579 Mintage: 200,000

Today's coin is a slight upgrade to the Dois Equis coin I had. This one has really nice color, although the strike was somewhat soft. The XX (20) centavos was one of the lowest value cent still in circulation when I was born. I remember seeing these until the late 70's. In my town you could use these to get 4 hard candy. In today's value, you would need 10 of these to get you 1 Euro Cent. The XX was minted from 1942 to 1969, in 1969 the coin changed to 20 and was minted for 5 more years. Issuer:Portugal Period:Second Republic (1926-1974) Type:Standard circulation coin Years: 1942-1969 Value:20 Centavos (0.20 PTE) Currency:Escudo (1911-2001) Composition:Bronze Weight:3 g Diameter:20.2 mm Thickness:1.17 mm Shape:Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized:28 February 2002 References:KM584 Mintage (1956):6,450,000

Nice additions! I particularly like the design of the 1928 10 escudos.

Portugal produced a lot of coins, if you include the monarchy coins, they are in the thousands. Since I can't collect the whole set of coins, I had to limit my 3535 Type Set to the few that I could complete. While in Portugal I had my eyes on finishing one of the sets. In the end it took me to 3 different coins shops, but I was able to finish the 1 Escudo set. The basis of the Portuguese monetary unit from ~1910 with the end of the monarchy (although the first coins were only minted in 1914) till 2001 with the change to the Euro. In terms of the 1 Escudo you had the following: 1910 (minted in 1914) 1 Escudo in Silver, commemorating the founding of the republic. 1915-1916 Silver Crown sized coin 1924-1926 Aluminum/Bronze coin 1927-1968 Copper Nickel coin 1969-1979 Large Bronze coin 1981-1986 Large Nickel Brass coin 1982 Roller Hockey Championship 1986-2001 Small Nickel Brass Coin 2001 The Last Escudo in Gold I was missing 3 to complete the set. The next 3 of 4 coins will be 1 Escudo *there will be a small detour before I show all the coins of the complete collection. After I am done I will post all the versions of the 1 Escudo. Today's is a 1981 large brass escudo. Issuer: Portugal Period: Third Republic (1974-date) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1981-1986 Value: 1 Escudo (1 PTE) Currency:Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Nickel brass Weight: 3 g Diameter: 18 mm Thickness: 1.63 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: 28 February 2002 References: KM614 Mintage (1981): 30,164,739

2nd from last 1 Escudo. The 1982 Escudo is the 2nd commemorative 1 Escudo, the first being the founding of the republic. This one commemorates the 25th Roller Hockey World Cup which was played in 1982 in Barcelos, Portugal. The games were played by 22 national teams (9 from Europe, 5 from South America, 4 from North America, 2 from Oceania, 1 from Africa and 1 from Asia). Portugal came in 1st, Spain in 2nd and Argentina in 3rd place. The coin. Issuer: Portugal Period: Third Republic (1974-date) Type: Circulating commemorative coin Year :1982 Value: 1 Escudo (1 PTE) Currency:Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Nickel brass Weight: 3 g Diameter: 18.2 mm Thickness: 1.7 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized:Yes References: KM612 Mintage (1982): 1,990,000

Today we get the small detour before we get to the last of the 1 Escudo. Portugal also minted the 2$50, 5$00 and 25$00 Escudos for the Roller Hockey Championships. The coins: Issuer:Portugal Period:Third Republic (1974-date) Type:Circulating commemorative coin Year:1982 Value:2.50 Escudos (2.5 PTE) Currency Escudo (1911-2001) Composition:Copper-nickel Weight: 3.5 g Diameter: 20.0 mm Thickness: 1.60 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: 1998 References: KM 613 Mintage (for all): 1,990,000 Weight: 7 g Diameter: 24.5 mm Thickness: 2 mm References: KM615 Weight: 11 g Diameter: 28.5 mm Thickness: 2.25 mm References: KM616

Very interesting as always, hfjacinto! I always reckoned that Portugal only issued the Roller Hockey set because their neighbours in Spain were hosting the Soccer World Cup the same year and they'd issued coins commemorating that!
Oddly enough I've just been on a cruise that included stops in Funchal and Lisbon, and I visited coin shops in both cities. I got some loose examples of the Roller Hockey coins plus some other commemoratives, earlier denominations I was missing (like the 1917-19 4 centavos) and my first crown-sized silver 1 Escudo.

Congrats on picking up some nice coins. The 4 Centavos is one of my favorite coins. Today we get the last of the Escudos. The 1 Escudo in 2001 was released as a gold commemorative. Came in a nice wooden box. And looks a lot like the last 1 Escudo minted, other than an AU on the reverse showing that this coin is gold. Like most gold US commemorative these trade at bullion value, I paid 16 euros over its bullion value which is much better than the premium for US based gold coins. Issuer: Portugal Period: Third Republic (1974-date) Type: Non-circulating coin Year 2001 Value: 1 Escudo (1 PTE) Currency::Escudo (1911-2001) Composition:Gold (.9166) Weight:4.6 g Diameter:16 mm Shape:Round (Proof) Orientation:Coin alignment Demonetized: 28 February 2002 References: KM631a Mintage: 50,000
