I keep Java and Flash turned completely off unless I need it and all ebay pages load fine without them so I doubt ebay is using any client side Java.

Although my ebay bidding days are pretty much over because of their shoving PayPal down our throats, I didn't have any particular problems with their interface, but then I use Macs most of the time, not Windoze machines. There were a few cases when pages didn't load during high traffic times, but when I refreshed, they always loaded right up.
