t360 I love that coin, but are you sure its not 20 years older like in 1543? Your renaissance pieces are all beauties.
hfjacinto - Love your tableau of the 3 cent items. I also have a 3 cent nickel dated 1865, but it is NO where near as nice as yours!

Next up for me is the 1906 US Mint-struck medal honoring Benjmin Franklin. Day 9 Foreign coin and a real favourite. This was issued in 1963 to celebrate the 100 years of the House of Gluckstein ruling Greece. Yes that is right Gluckstein as in Denmark. King George I (1843 - 1913) was a son of King Christian IX of Denmark (1818 - 1906), not one Greek Monarch was actually a native Greek. The earlier deposed King Otto was a German.   Kingdom of Greece 30 Drachma 1963 The coin shows all 5 kings to date, George I, Constantine I (1913 - 1917 and 1920 - 1922), George II (1935 - 1947), Alexander (1917 - 1920 died from a monkey bite) and Paul (1947 - 1964). It does not show Constantine II who became king the next year. The irony is the inscription mentions the love of the Greek people. At this stage they barely stood them and already had them overthrown between 1922 and 1935 (A neo fascist general Metaxas had them reinstalled in 1935). In 1967 they were overthrown completely and after 6 years of a military junta, Greece became a democratic republic (Hellas Demokratia). I love the design showing the rulers and the map of Greece. It is 34mm in size and is .835 silver. It was much larger than the silver 20 Drachma in circulation then. |

Lovely coin, Princetane!  Another French coin for me today, and a design that has always been one of my favourites: Augustin Dupre's rendering of Hercules standing between two female figures representing Liberty and Fraternity:  This 1973 coin was originally in a French FDC set of the same year that I received as a birthday present from my parents, having hinted to them that the 10-franc coin was being minted for the last time that year and having shown them the advertisement in a coin magazine! It was the first coin with this design that I ever had. I subsequently got some earlier silver 10F coins at face value in 1976 by asking around banks in Lyon. A few years ago I purchased a second 1973 FDC set for £5 from a junk shop (much less than the silver content of the 10F coin alone) and I broke open my original set so that I could put the 10F coin in my coin album. |
