Thank you, Dearborn. The high reliefs are thick coins.

Quote: . I like collecting proofs. Real collectors get the proofs. Your high relief kangaroo looks pretty good, much better detail than the swan.

That's a really nice coin, GLB.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Wading through 2+ boxes of British Oceania coins and tokens preparatory to shipping them out for auction next year, I came across this brassy little piece, which I believe is my only post-Victoria token from anywhere in "The British World." Issued in 1905 for use at the bar in New Zealand's Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club, they were withdrawn less than two years later, so survivors are often found in excellent condition similar to mine.
Their background -- as well as the Club's -- is covered admirably in this 1979 article by D.R. Kidd in the New Zealand Numismatic Journal. Kidd informs us that the Maori gentleman depicted on the obverse of this token is carrying a taiaha over his right shoulder. A quick search tells us that this traditional weapon represents "not only martial prowess but also the mana (prestige, authority, power) of its wielder..."
