It seems that the struck through piece could be part of the crescent shape feature?

Yea coin hi. There is an echo of that struck through next to it. You can see it in my second set of pictures. I thought that could have been struck into the rim as well. Closer examination led me to believe the fin was much bigger and soMe was broken off as the coin came out of the press.

Wow! I'm jealous! What a fantastic error!
I could spend a week just looking at this one and trying to figure out what happened.
Thanks for posting and thanks for the new images!

So I figured this coin out. The strike through is not a strike through But where the clad layer split and slid during the strike. I busted this coin out of the case and it is Currently at PCGS along with my no date Roosevelt struck on fold over clad layer and 1980D Lincoln. http://goccf.com/t/422930

Will, did you happen to weigh this one while it was out of the slab, before sending it off?

I'm not sure about your theory, Will. If the clad layer had split, then coin metal should have risen into the gap. Instead, the gap is recessed.

I should have weighed it but didn't. I did notice the edge of the coin was crazy looking. I'm pretty sure PCGS will not do it justice but at least it will be holdered with trueview.

So I cracked the case on this one and sent it to PCGS. I was very nervous about the outcome. The ANACS holder basically fell apart. I was able to open it with my fingernails. Long story short it ended well. Here's an in hand picture of the case and awesome true view pictures! Also it these pictures it seems the area in the southeast missing date is reassessed. That would be a plausible explanation for the partial missing date.

Nice, I'm curious why the weight isn't on the slab. Seems helpful for these errors to know.

Congrats on this one.
Is that part of a collar clash at the top of the obverse from k10-k2? (& the reverse looks slightly misaligned.)
Any chance your coin never left the striking chamber after an initial strike (and without rotating) while part of the missing clad layer was pulled loose? And was struck again with the loosened clad layer on its edge? Seems like that might account for the anomaly we're seeing.

I'd call that a fantastic coin with a pretty lackluster effort on the part of PCGS. Sure, missing clad layer, but, um, didn't they see maybe just a tiny little bit more going on? Doesn't a coin like this go off for detailed analysis by Jon Sullivan (a CCF member) who surely would have commented on the extraordinary bits the coins shows outside of just a missing clad layer. I can't explain it, but missing clad layer certainly doesn't explain it all.

Agree with TROP on his statement. PCGS? Sorry for the adepts but SUCKS. From 10 coins, and wait 6 months to come back, and after I send with also notes what I look for, come back like nothing and also wrong. Also big mistake for an 1957 quarter who come back wrong Reengraved LOL. I was ask for RPM. this name it is just a price buster for the blind peoples.

At Pete. I think you could be correct. Also yea disappointed in the label but glad that it came in straight. Sil I can't believe you got a TF out of the rpm! I recently saw an even more impressive miss grade by NGC. It was a Washington goiter and was a normal coin. Crazy

Taking another look at this coin, and this may have been alluded to earlier, but I see the struck through portion as being once overlaying the crescent shape designless feature. I'm not sure when or how but it seems the right dimensions.
