I previously posted about the 1892 US commemorative half dollar for the World's Coulmbian Exposition and its dual dates of "1492" and "1892" - the Exposition was staged to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the New World. (The Exposition grounds were dedicated in 1892, but the Exposition did not open to the public until 1893.) You can see the post here: 1892 World's Columbian Exposition Half Dollar. One hundred years later, the US Mint struck a three-coin program to mark the 500th Anniversary of Columbus' voyage. The program included a CuNi Clad Half Dollar, a Silver Dollar and a Gold Half Eagle. Each of the three coins features the dual dates "1492" and "1992" as part of their design - Half Dollar - Obverse; Silver Dollar - Reverse and Gold Half Eagle - Obverse.. In 2010, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a Limited Edition Silver Dollar that commemorated the 75th anniversary of Canada's first circulating silver dollar in 1935. The coin's obverse presents the King George V's (KGV) portrait as it appeared on the 1935 Silver Dollar. The reverse of the coin mirrors the Voyageur design of the 1935 issue, with the adjustment of the "1935" single date to a "1935 - 2010" dual date to commemorate the anniversary. In 1911, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M), and the Royal Mint in London, combined to strike several trial pieces for a potential new Canadian Silver Dollar (SD). To mark the 100th anniversary of these trial strikes, the R C M struck a 2011 Special Edition SD. Note: No Silver Dollars were struck for general release/circulation in Canada in 1911; Canada's first SD for circulation was released in 1935.The 2011 commemorative coin closely reproduced the original 1911 design, but with a few minor changes. The changes include an update to the coin's denomination from "ONE DOLLAR" to "1 DOLLAR" on the reverse to make it bilingual and a change of the single "1911" date to make it a dual date of "1911-2011" to reflect the coin's commemorative anniversary status. In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) honored the brave Canadians who volunteered to serve and be part of Canada's Expeditionary Force (CEF) in World War I. The CEF was the segment of Canada's military that went overseas. The CEF initially served on the western front, but its role expanded into other war theaters; 424,000 of the approximately 630,000 Canadians that answered the call for new enlistments went overseas. The central element of the coin's commemorative reverse design is a fresh-from-Canada foot soldier kneeling in the foreground with his body facing left and slightly forward. Just in front of the soldier (from the viewer's perspective) is seen a Maple Leaf crest cap badge, one of many versions used by Canadian soldiers during WWI. A convoy of ships is depicted in the background, symbolizing the ships that brought the CEF to Europe. Across the mid-ground of the coin is presented a group of soldiers marching across the scene - they are presented as silhouettes; they represent soldiers who had already experienced the hardships of war. The coin bears three dates, dual dates for the starting and ending years of WWI - "1914-1918" - plus the date of issue - "2014" - all on the reverse. The US Mint struck a three-coin commemorative program in 1993 to mark "the 50th anniversary of the 50th anniversary of the United States' involvement in World War II." The program included a CuNi Clad Half Dollar, a Silver Dollar and a Gold Half Eagle. Each of the three coins features the dual dates "1991-1995" to signify the 50th anniversary years of the US' engagement in WWII - from December 7, 1941 through September 2, 1945. (Note: The US base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii was attacked on December 7, 1941, the US' formal declaration of war against Japan occurred on December 8th.) The commemorative dual dates are found on the obverse of each coin.
