Here's another modern issue from the Royal Canadian Mint - the 1999 silver dollar that marks the 225th Anniversary of the 1774 voyage of Juan Perez and his sighting of the islands that would subsequently be named the Queen Victoria Islands (by the British), and renamed as Haida Gwaii in 2010 after a treaty between the Haida people and the Canadian Government went into force. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II; the portrait was the work of Dora de Pedery-Hunt. The coin's commemorative reverse design features the Santiago at anchor off Langara Island at the northern tip of present-day Haida Gwaii with a delegation of local First Nations Haida people approaching the ship in a canoe (foreground) with additional canoes in the background. The dual dates of the voyage's anniversary - "1774 - 1999" - are found on the reverse off the starboard side of the ship. The design was created by Canadian-born artist David J. Craig and engraved by the Mint's Stan Witten. 1999 225th Anniversary of the Voyage of Juan Perez and the Sighting of the Queen Charlotte Islands For more background information on this coin, see: - 1999 Voyage Of Juan Perez Silver DollarFor other of my posts about coins and medals, including posts about Canadian commemorative pieces, check out: Commems Collection.

Quote: 2019 French silver 10 euros showing the obverse of a 1791 coin of King Louis XVI: @NumisRob: Nice coin! I remember looking at the series on the Paris Mint web site when it was released. I thought the coins were interesting, but ultimately decided not to pursue the coin/series. Thanks for posting - it was nice to see an actual image vs. rendering.

The US Military Academy at West Point (USMA) has a history that dates back to the early days of the United States - 1802. Its mission is "to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army." ( US Military Academy - West Point) In 1994, the US Congress authorized a commemorative silver dollar to help mark the bicentennial of the US Military Academy at West Point. The Act specified an issue year of 2002 - the actual bicentennial year. (It was definitely a case of planning ahead!). The coin's obverse presents a cadet color guard in parade with the Military Academy's Washington Hall and Cadet Chapel in the background. The Academy's bicentennial anniversary dates "1802" and "2002" flank the motto "LIBERTY" at the coin's top rim. The design is the work of then US Mint Sculptor-Engraver James Ferrell. The design on the reverse presents the Bicentennial logo of the USMA. At the center of the design, within a ring, is the Athena Helmet "an emblem that consist[s] of a sword, a universal symbol of war, and the helmet of Pallas Athena. Athena, a fully armed mythological goddess, is associated with the arts of war, and her helmet signifies wisdom and learning." (USMA Fact Sheet) The design's bicentennial inscriptions encircle the helmet logo with "1802 WEST POINT 2002" at the top - a second appearance of dual dating on the coin - and "BICENTENNIAL" at the bottom; the two inscription elements are separated by five-pointed stars. The design is the work of then US Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti. 2002 US Military Academy Bicentennial Silver Dollar For other of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including more on the history and designs of the West Point dollar, see: Commems Collection and - 2002 US Military Academy Bicentennial - Coins with Stars Thread- 2002 US Military Academy Bicentennial - Coins with Flags Thread- 2002 US Military Academy Bicentennial - Coins Designed by John Mercanti Thread

Lovely coin, commems! Here's another French example - a 5 franc coin issued in 1989 with the dual dates 1889-1989 for the centenary of the Eiffel Tower:

Each of the artists/designers of the coin chose an unusual perspective to present the famous Eiffel Tower. I've always wondered how long it takes for folks to realize that Jimenez is presenting a stylized view of the Tower from below looking up?

Here's a dual-dated British 50p to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. The more significant 900th anniversary in 1966 had to make do with a set of stamps - that was before the commemorative coin explosion of the 21st century!
