The Royal Mint made the same mistake in 1887 with the sixpence that the US Mint did with the nickel in 1883. The new sixpence didn't have the value on the reverse but just a shield that was similar to the reverse of earlier half-sovereigns. Many were gilded and passed off as half-sovereigns, so the Mint withdrew them and replaced them with a plain design showing the denomination beneath a crown:

The other controversial coin of 1887 was the double-florin or 4 shilling piece. It was often mistaken for a crown and received the nickname 'the barmaid's ruin' as barmaids sometimes gave too much change to customers when one was used to pay for drinks. The coin was massively unpopular and lasted only four years:
