Quote: I suspect that if we go "upstream" in van der Chijs we will find a section where he also describes the political situation, since that was the style of those early numismatics books. I didn't have the energy ttkoo does to struggle with translating. Perhaps you are correct with your suspicions. He paints a fascinating picture of the struggles of the early years of the formation of Holland. When I finish this project, I'll send you a copy.

Quote: Hopefully @bd251 or @JohnConduitt has one hidden somewhere. If I do, it's hidden from me as well. I have a few coins that I need to confirm their ID, but don't recall that any would potentially even date to the 700s

I have 33 coins to play between here and 1296 CE, so I'm hoping others are able to chip in. Time will tell if we can get that far.

I have a maybe, but waiting for a second and third opinion from Zeno. Dubious at best. For those with sleep apnoea, don't hold your breath...

The dubious coin is still dubious. However, this fals is nicely placed to continue the run back through time. 1354 CE - AH 755 AE fals Mamluk Empire - ruler al-Salih Salah al-Din Salih (752 - 755) attributed as Balog II # 339 "Year 5 The Righteous King"

Excellent coin! AFAICT (from Zeno) it's a one-year type, so the date should be definite even if illegible. (I wasn't able to figure out which part of it is the date.) Upcoming gaps, as of the last time we checked, four months ago: 1350, 1348, 1345, 1341, 1340?, 1336, 1335, 1332, 1331, 1330?, 1328, 1309, 1308?, 1307?, 1306, 1302, and then probably 1298 (and after that the data is too spotty). Some of those might have been filled up in the meantime.

The date is on the left side photo, top line. There are two words "Year Five", but on mine it is not very legible at all. Here is a snippet from Balog "The only other Bahri sultan who could have struck this fals would be al-Salih Ismail (743-746 H.), because the digit of the date, 5, is included only in his regnal years. Al-Salih Hajji reigned between 783 and 784 H. and a second time between 791 and 792 H. Therefore it must belong to al-Salih Salih 752-755 H. Al Salih Ismail is, on stylistic grounds, less likely."I have 1345 and 1302, so hopefully we can fill in some more.

Numista says "in top the second digit of the year, in bottom the first digit as well as the name of the workshop". I'm not sure what is meant by "second digit" and "first digit" here - is it "five" and "fifty"? Balog's illustration doesn't show the bottom part of the legend at all; I'm guessing on his examples it was off flan and/or otherwise illegible. But presumably if it was inconsistent with the 755 date that would have been noticed long ago. EDIT: I see that the 1302 had been mentioned back then and I just failed to update the list. My own next entry is 1351 (probable), then 1334 (definite), then 1323 (very very uncertain), then I don't have anything until the 12th century.
