Ok, I stand corrected. Did not think that such a toning could be anything but artificially induced.

With the hits on the cheek, I don't see how it grades above MS62.

Not gonna lie--I love the look on this coin. I'm not willing to pay the premium a coin like this if it is indeed a 10x multiplier, but I do appreciate the appearance.

MS64 I have the coin at 63, but I gave it a color bump.

The coin looks AT. NT coins do not typically have strong rainbow toning on both sides without some help.

Lots of chatter on the cheek. Absent the toning I'd say no better than 62 but they might have bumped it up to 63 with a * for the toning. I'd be very surprised to see MS-64 but who knows.

NGC has MS63 and MS64 in a range of roughly $100 to $200.

Considering many of you thought this is overgraded, it may be a surprise to see that it sold for $5280 in 2020. Here is the auction description:

The 1899-O Morgan dollar is widely available in most any grade, but rarely do we come across examples as spectacularly toned as this wild near-Gem. Shades of electric-blue and golden-orange blend seamlessly with magenta and sea-green patina. Eye appeal is extraordinary.

Wow! Again, I want the coin (I'll be upfront about that), but even if I had that money to spend on coins right now, and it was available to me for that price, I wouldn't buy it. I would use that money to get another older coin I am missing for my type set.

Thanks for sharing this one--very interested thread!

You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it, I'm having fun with these threads! I just started another one. I agree with you, I love the coin but at $5000 I just wouldn't go anywhere near it.

It's become very common for coin doctors to buy up BU Morgan rolls cheap, MS 60 to MS 62, and then put them in the oven for a bit. Send the ones with the nicest colors off to NGC and PCGS and hope for a clean slab. As this coin demonstrates, you just need to get one through to make up for the cost of the others. And the "rainbow dollars" market is so ridiculous that even the rejects can be sold off on ebay for a substantial premium over roll cost.

Fenton, with all due respect, I'm sure that is happening like you say, but it doesn't necessarily mean this one has been a product of that.

Edit: I know you can leave coins with great lustre in mailing envelopes for months on end and can have amazing toning results, and is that artificial toning? That's the great debate.

I'd want a CAC sticker, I think, before I'd shell out $5800 for the toning alone.

That coin is naturally toned from years in the canvus mint bags. Seems like a lot of cheek chatter for a 64 though. Price...some one is delusional.
