Bump111 Pillar of the Community United States 3327 Posts	Posted 11/09/2022 4:58 pm The Morgan presented here is an 1883-O VAM-52a. This variety exhibits concave fields and beveling due to aggressing die rework. This coin is beautiful in hand - photos don't do it justice. I purchased via online auction, ungraded and unattributed. The aggressive die work and concave fields create an amazing cartwheel effect on the obverse but result in slightly muted luster on the reverse. Signs of beveling can be seen around the obverse / reverse legends, near the eagle's leg and areas of the wreaths, and resulted in denticle shallowing in some spots. This beveling also creates a "faux" frosted effect on the peripheral lettering. The reverse shows signs of a previous die crack through "STATES" also visible on the VAM-52. I think this is a pretty good strike for a New Orleans Morgan, especially considering the die state. The ear and surrounding hair are very well struck. I didn't expect it when I purchased, but I consider this to be the most eye-appealing Morgan I currently have. I guestimate the grade for this coin in the MS63 range.
