I checked on 1982-P quarters the other day on ebay. I found five times as many apparent scams of very high priced coins than I found uncirculated coins!! Nice Unc '82-P's just weren't available except for a few slabbed coins at prices higher than I had anticipated. These appeared to be somewhat overgraded as well.

I'm surprised that ebay allows items to be advertised on their site at prices several thousand times their actual value. There are so many of them that neophytes might believe they are at fair prices.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Just drives me crazy to let him continue!

I know the feeling, but you have to know ebay policy.
ebay isn't "doing anything" because there is no policy being broken.

There is no policy that a seller must ask for a price that is not considered a rip-off by others.

There is a policy that raw coins can't have a BIN or starting price above $2,500.
not in this listing

If ebay had a policy against using inappropriate adjectives, then they would be complicit in breaking that policy with their recently rolled out AI description generator. It creates some of the most ridiculously inappropriate descriptions I have ever seen.

This quarter is not:
a "rare find"
have a "a unique design"
a "must-have"
a "rare quarter"

Being uncertified does not add "to its rarity and value"

The guy has zero feedback as a seller and none as a buyer within the last year. with his asking prices, I doubt that will change much.

Yeah. Seller's like this do nothing but tarnish all other Coin Sales on ebay, legitimate or not.
Prior to ebay being around, an un-educated buyer could have been taken advantage of at a local
coin shop in the very same way. ebay just made it a heck of alot easier for that type of person to
rip people off. I agree with, Freedom to sell things at what ever price you want.
It's a harsh but necessary reality in the world of commerce. Buyers Beware!

I don't think these are scams as much as they are clueless people getting excited.

Put yourself in a newbies shoes and type bicentennial quarter into google. You will be inundated with false crap info. Sure someone with some knowledge can find the correct information, but, a neophyte can not.

ebay can also mislead the newbie. Seeing so many other such and such coins listed for such prices can only lead people to believe that they are worth this amount.

The biggest problem is not that some will fall for these prices and get ripped off. The biggest problem is that and potential coin collectors will get get sucked in and once they do find the truth they can only conclude that the whole hobby is a scam.

That is probably the biggest threat to our hobby in that new interests are dashed by those who continue to betray the trust of others. It's been going on forever but the internet has allowed people to be scrammed from afar.

My biggest pet peeve in this regard is " no mint mark" being shoved into titles. There are currently more than 28,000 listings in Coins and Paper Money with " no mint mark" in the title. It drives me nuts. It's so utterly meaningless and stupid. New collectors see it and think it confers some extra value when it's just complete nonsense.

..as I've mentioned in previous posts, I had owned my current coin collection for about 50 years before ever really looking through it, starting just over a year ago.
..and before joining this site and realizing the numerous errors found on coins, I was clueless and got sucked into the whole "1964-D LMC "L" on edge" that I found on ebay.
I sold one of my coins and then found out it wasn't a legit error coin and then pulled all
my auctions for coins till I have better knowledge!
It's easy to get duped though.

Me? personally I think they are MOSTLY scams yes. But also agree it's people not knowing any better as well, contributing to the problem overall.

As I mentioned, yesterday I sent him a note. Today I received a reply.
Here is what I wrote:

Hello,

Regarding this "rare quarter" you have up for sale: there is nothing rare about it. The Philadelphia mint made 688.7 million of these coins in 1999.

At best, a circulated 1999 Connecticut Statehood Quarter is going to be worth 25 cents. To ask $1,100.00 for it is outrageous.

I thought you'd like to know.

James

Here is the reply I received:

Hello and thank you for your input and feedback. Have a great day!

I think AI is indeed starting to take over. But that's not Artificial Intelligence--it's Artificial Idiocy.

The seller's reply does not surprise me in the least. This forum is really one of the best arenas to learn how
not to be taken advantage of in the Wide World of Coins.

Have a nice day indeed. Each and every one of these listings is a scam. Shameful.
