2025 UK £2 coin commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway:
Post-Your-Coins-And-Medals-Featuring-Railroads-And-Trains
Although not the world's first railway, the Stockton & Darlington is normally considered a pioneering line as it linked two major towns, provided both freight and passenger transport and was a 'common carrier' - open to all - previous railroads were generally short lines linking collieries or factories with ports or canal wharves and not carrying passengers or general freight. The Stockton & Darlington Railway also appears on the reverse of the £5 note issued by the Bank of England in 1990:
Post-Your-Coins-And-Medals-Featuring-Railroads-And-Trains
Although parts of the route have been realigned and improved over the years, it is still open to both freight and passengers today as part of the UK's national rail network. (Passengers today travel in modern diesel multiple-unit trains, not in open coal trucks behind a steam locomotive!)
