Upon inspections of both sides of the coins I found this Reverse of a different 1949. I think this is a DDR variety. Have a good look at the pictures.

The 49-VI-1C-DDO is a hard one to find in a decent grade, Chadcoins, your example is the highest grade I've seen so far, nice catch!

Enyaw, yours is impressive too!

Chadcoins,

The reverse of the 49 is deterioration, a lot of the working dies from 1944 to 1950 for the 1 cent denomination lacked quality control and were put to use far longer than they should have.

Notice how the bud is not doubled, but the left side of the leaf and stem is? if it were a doubled die reverse the bud would also be doubled on the left side. I have found this type of deterioration on a couple of examples of the 1949 doubled die obverse, and on regular strike 1949's, if it were a doubled die I would have included it in the book.

Had a new roll of 1965 - 5 cents kicking around and found this coin in it. DD 5 and the tool marks below the Beaver. Had one more DD5 with no tool marks. Kinda interesting. Enjoy the pics.

I have some with and without your so called tool marks also. I wonder if the tool used was a lathe. All raised marks are evenly spaced and parallel to the center of the coin.

Bingo , they are circular lathe lines that didn't get polished out.
