I think I'll wrap up my contributions to this thread with possibly my most apropos submission - the 1958 USS Olympia relic medal.

In 1958, 60 years after the USS Olympia participated in the Battle of Manila Bay (Philippines), the Cruiser Olympia Association melted a USS Olympia propeller to create the source metal for a fundraising commemorative medal. Medals could be obtained for donations of $1.00 or more to the Association. Funds derived from sales of the medals were to be used to support to repair the ship so that it could become a museum ship located in Philadelphia.

The propeller (my understanding is that it was a spare propeller carried by the ship) was melted by Bridgeport Brass Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The metal was used by Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey to strike bronze relic medals.

I look forward to seeing what others have to offer.
