I agree it is a nice and very lucky find, and should be appreciated as such.
However..
And I have watched more than a few of them. It is fairly evident to me that most metal detecting folks are clueless about coins. Their first instinct is to rub a dirt covered disc with their thumb to see if they can recognize it.
They seldom consider that they may be greatly reducing the value of something potentially rare. There are certainly gentler ways of removing mud from coins. And patience brings rewards. But eagerness to one-up your partner 'out in the field' by guys used to finding belt buckles or old tools where abrasion does not matter so much, usually wins out.
