That last one looks too much like a tattoo.

The pointy shield one with the scroll across it reminds me of those Doodle Art posters that were out in the '70s.

And yes, the sheaf one looks too much like '20s-'30s German Rentenmark pfennigs.

They're all too simple, have nothing historic about them, and look a lot like cheap tokens. Couldn't they come up with a outline map of the US, or the flag, or something? Or better still, go back to the Wheatie one year and alternate with the Lincoln Memorial the next...

I think the designing of coins for a competition is quite hard. I have done several for British coins, and the problem is, you have to design something on paper, that will be judged on paper, for something that will be in essence, a sculptured piece of work.
It is hard to know what something will look like when it is in your change, shining or otherwise. The coin might actually be quite popular when it comes out, it might not look so cartoony when it is on a coin.

I mean, the Indian cent head looks cartoony. There have certainly been coins with similar designs to this, and they seemed to have come out of it alright.

I think the basic idea will be approved subject to modification. I'd like to see a few changes myself. First have One Cent at the bottom, and E. Pluribus Unum on the ribbon. This would leave space for stars on the shield. I'd also like wheat ears added to either side, kind of tying in this design and the earlier Wheat cent. ~ Jim

I guess that this will just show how out of the loop I am with regard to US coins, but what will be on the obverse? (or is that still up for debate as well?)

As a joke, I personally think that it would be hilarious if the mint made both sides identical. They could also save $ on dies that way.

A lot of people are complaining the designs look cartoony. Well they do because they are cartoons! They're just drawings of the designs. You have to use a bit of imagination; think of how they'd look on a coin. I actually really like the shield design. It'd be a nice throw-back to the Shield nickel.

I agree. Now that I have seen the 2009 cents with my own eyes, I think they look a lot better than the drawings. Many coins look better or even worse than the original drawings; the Statehood Quarters being a prime example.

The wheat design is too symetrical and not enough detail. The shield is too thin, and is too symetrical with too much open space. With nothing at the base of the coin, it appears incomplete. Most people like "wreath" coins, place a wreath on the coin around the edges and redistribute the motto and inscription...shrinking the ribbon, placing starts, etc. All of this could be properly done without making it too cluttered. But the design stinks as is and requires much more work before it would be ready to be placed on U.S. currency...

I agree with jbuck. Once the design is on the coin and we have it in our hands, it may not look so bad.

Isn't the design supposed to depict Abe Lincolns legacy?
