Nice historical collection of Arkansas notes - enjoyed looking at all the interesting examples. My only Arkansas note is a duplicate of the Peters Landing $1 note above; I don't collect Arkansas but I do appreciate it for its motto: "In God is Our Trust" variant on the "In God We Trust" motto on our currency today. This particular translation of the Latin: "In Te Domine Speramus" to my knowledge is only on this note and a few rare US Federal $20 interest bearing notes issues in the 1860's

Thanks very much, beryl. Nice example of that Peter's Landing note.
I believe "In God is Our Trust" was also used on a few 19th century U.S. pattern coins, but I don't recall any specific examples off the top of my head.

Just a side quest thought here. You probably have already searched the archives there, but the Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas has an incredible collection of print materials relevant to Arkansas numismatics in their special collections room.

Thanks, fortcollins. I have looked online at some of the lists of their holdings before, but that's about it. I need to dig into it some more, and make arrangements to go up there some time.

The First National Bank of McGehee, Arkansas, charter 13280, was the only issuing charter in this town. It was a short-lived bank; it was chartered on February 11, 1929, and liquidated on July 1, 1931. There were 24,072 1902 PB $5 notes and 45,174 1929 Type 1 $5 notes issued during that time. The NBN Census lists only 7 large and 8 small notes. While this 1929 T1 example has been heavily circulated, it's typical of the known notes; all but one of the small size notes in the census are listed in VG or F grades (that other one is listed as XF). Signatures of cashier W.E. Thompson and president E.S. Terral. McGehee is a town in Desha County in southeast Arkansas. The McGehee family settled in the area in the 1850's, establishing a commissary on their property after the railroad was built in the late 1870's and people started arriving in the area. A post office was established in the commissary in 1879 and was named McGehee. The town was incorporated in 1906.

Thanks! I remembered you mentioning that you'd lived there, jbuck, and figured you'd like seeing this note.
