Another good night earlier this week on Heritage, with a total of 5 large size and 4 small size Arkansas NBN's added to my collection. Here are the large size acquisitions. The First National Bank of Bentonville, AR, was chartered on October 24, 1904, and was liquidated in 1932. The bank issued $5, $10 and $20 1902 RS/DB/PB and 1929 Ty.1 notes. There are 34 large and 7 small notes listed in the T&P census, with 14 $10 1902PB notes listed. Signatures of cashier J.R. Randels and president S.A. Moore. Neither of the signatures on this note are currently listed in the SPMC database for this charter, and I've reported this to SPMC. I notice what looks like part of the letter "S" in the upper right margin of the face. This would have been the topmost note in a sheet of three $10 notes and one $20 note. Any ideas what this is? The State National Bank of Texarkana, AR was chartered on February 13, 1904 and merged and became part of Regions Bank in 1998. It was one of two issuing charters in Texarkana. The bank issued 1902RS/DB/PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes in denominations of $10 and $20. While 1902 Plain Back notes are common with 37 in the census, there are only four 1902 Date Back notes listed (two $10 and two $20 examples). This is the higher graded of the two $20 notes in the census, though PMG did mention "Rust" on the holder. It's just a few spots mostly confined to the margins so I wasn't too concerned about that. Signatures of cashier Stuart (J.S.) Wilson and president E.A. Frost. The First National Bank of Helena, AR was chartered on March 29, 1887 and was liquidated in 1929. The bank issued $5, $10 and $20 1882 BB and 1902 RS/DB/PB notes. It is one of two chartering banks in Helena, the other which issued only small size notes. There are a total of 18 notes in the T&P census for this bank, with this note being one of only two $20 1902 Date Back notes listed, with the other listed as a grade of VG. Signatures of cashier C.C. Agee and president S.S. Faulkner. The First National Bank of Fort Smith, AR was chartered on March 29, 1872, as The National Bank of Western Arkansas at Fort Smith. In 1887 the title was changed to FNB of Fort Smith and the bank is still in existence today under that name. It was one of six issuing charters in Fort Smith. Under the 1st title, Original and 1875 series notes were issued, and under the 2nd title 1875 series through 1929 Ty.2 notes were issued in a variety of denominations. 1902 Plain Back notes were issued in denominations of $10 and $20 and are quite common with 33 $10 and 30 $20 notes in the census. Signatures of cashier A.S. Bullock and president F.A. Handlin. The Arkansas National Bank of Fayetteville, AR, was chartered on July 8, 1907, and was liquidated in 1931. The bank issued $5, $10, and $20 1902 RS/DB/PB and 1929 Ty.1 notes. There are 36 large and 9 small notes listed in the T&P census, with 21 $5 1902PB notes listed. This is one of the higher-graded notes listed, though the holder does have an annotation of "Minor Repair". Signatures of cashier Tom L. Hart and B.R. Davidson.

Thank you, jbuck! Here are the small size Arkansas National Bank Note acquisitions I made this week. The Farmers National Bank of Clarksville, AR, was chartered on January 17, 1920. It became a state chartered bank in 1978, then after several name changes it merged and became a part of Relyance Bank in 2013. This was one of two issuing banks in the city, and it issued 1902 PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes in denominations of $10 and $20. There are 7 large size and 15 small size notes in the T&P census, and this example is one of five $20 1929 Ty.1 notes listed. Signatures of cashier W.E. King and president R.A. Morgan. Clarksville is in the northwest of the state, and was originally settled in 1819 and formally established in late 1836. It sits along I-40 northwest of Russellville on the north shore of Lake Dardanelle. It's only about a 2 hour drive from us, and we went there last year to dine at a very nice farm-to-table restaurant that unfortunately just recently closed. Bill Doolin, the outlaw who founded the Wild Bunch, also known as the Doolin-Dalton Gang, was born there. The First National Bank of De Queen, AR, was chartered on July 31, 1901. After many acquisitions and a couple name changes, it became a state chartered bank in 2016 and then merged and became a part of Arvest Bank in 2018. This bank issued 1882BB/DB/VB, 1902PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes in denominations of $10 and $20. There are 8 large size and 16 small size notes listed in the T&P census, with this being one of two $20 1929 Ty.2 notes listed. Signatures of cashier R.P. Mitchell and president Abe (T.A.) Collins. De Queen is in the southwest part of the state, and the name of the town is the anglicization of the name of the Dutch merchant Jan de Goeijen. Two other towns in Arkansas were named after some of his family members; Mena was named after his wife Folmina, and Vandervoort was named after his mother, whose maiden name was Van der Voort. Additionally, Zwolle, Louisiana was named after his hometown in the Netherlands; DeRidder, Louisiana was named after his sister-in-law Ella de Ridder; and Amsterdam, Missouri was named for the city where his company was located. The American National Bank of Rogers, AR, was chartered on June 22, 1915. It became a state chartered bank in 2000 and merged and became a part of Arvest Bank in 2002. This was one of two issuing banks in the city, and it issued 1902 PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes in denominations of $5, $10 and $20. There are 21 large size, 23 1929 Ty.1 and four 1929 Ty.2 notes in the T&P census, and this example is one of two $5 1929 Ty.2 notes listed. Signatures of cashier T.E. Harris and president J.H. Buttram. The First National Bank of Fayetteville, AR, was chartered on July 28, 1904, and merged and became a part of Worthen National Bank of Northwest Arkansas in 1992. There were three issuing banks in the city, and this charter issued 1902 RS/DB/PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes in denominations of $5, $10 and $20. Both large and small notes from this charter are fairly common, with 23 $10 1929 Ty.1 notes in the census. Signatures of cashier F.P. Earle and president Art T. Lewis.

Thanks, jbuck! A few small size Arkansas NBN's I picked up on Heritage this week. The First National Bank of Paris, AR, was chartered on February 1, 1920, and was liquidated in 1934. It was the only issuing charter in this town. The bank issued $10 denomination 1902 PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes. There are 12 large and 25 small notes in the T&P census, with all 25 of the small notes 1929 Ty.1 examples. This note is a fairly average grade for the note survivors, with most being in the F-VF grade range. Signatures of cashier Lewis C. Sadler and president L.B. Crenshaw, the only signature combination for this bank. Paris is the county seat of Logan County, and is about midway between Fort Smith and Russellville. The area was settled in the 1820's, and Paris was incorporated in 1879. As expected, it was named after the French capital, and even has a miniature copy of the Eiffel Tower across the street from the county courthouse. Paris is close to Mount Magazine State Park and not too far from the beautiful Petit Jean State Park. Just east of Paris is the town of Subiaco which is the home to Subiaco Abbey, a Benedictine abbey of 33 monks which was founded in 1878. It's pretty amazing when you drive along a sparsely-populated 2-lane road, then crest a hill and see this large abbey on a hill near the road! The City National Bank of Fort Smith, AR, was chartered on September 8, 1914. It merged and became part of BancorpSouth Bank in 2000. It was one of 6 issuing charters (one which had two different titles) in Fort Smith. The bank issued $10 denomination 1902 DB/PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes. Notes from this charter are fairly common; a total of 47 large size and 63 small size notes are in the T&P census, with this being one of 48 examples of the $10 1929 Ty.1 notes. Signatures of cashier R.H. Kagy and president I.H. Nakdimen. This is the third Arkansas note I own, each from different charters, which features the signature of president Iser H. Nakdimen. As mentioned in a previous post, he was president of 8 different charters, 4 each in Oklahoma and Arkansas. His terms as president overlapped significantly among those banks. In addition, one of those charters, #11830 in Hartford, AR, issued notes under 3 different titles while he was president. The First National Bank in Lake Village, AR, was chartered on August 31, 1932, succeeding the FNB of Lake Village, the only other issuing charter for this city. This bank issued $5 denomination 1929 T1/T2 notes, and while there are only 19 Type 1 notes in the T&P census, Type 2 examples are very common today, with 116 in the census and a whopping 97 of those in grades between 63 and 68! All of those uncirculated notes are in the run of serial numbers between A011981 and A012100. Signatures of cashier S.H. Williams and president B.C. Clark, the only signature combination for this bank.

Thanks, jbuck! ebay always has a few of this Lake Village bank's high-grade T2 notes since they're so common, but they're always way overpriced. Finally one showed up on Heritage and I got it for a good price. The large size note I showed before was from the other Lake Village charter (FNB of Lake Village), and that charter also issued small size notes which I'll be wanting to add an example of.

Thanks, hfjacinto! Yes, it's always easy getting started with the cheap and common ones, then you get hooked and have to spend a lot more money to get the tougher ones!

A few large size Arkansas NBN's I picked up from Heritage this week. The First National Bank of Mena, AR, was chartered on March 10, 1904 and went into receivership in 1928. The bank, one of three issuing charters in the city, issued 1902 RS/DB/PB notes in denominations of $10 and $20. There are a total of 13 notes in the T&P census for this bank, with this one of seven $20 1902 PB notes. Signatures of cashier S.W. Duke and president J.T. Magruder. The First National Bank of DeWitt, AR was chartered on April 18, 1912 and was the only issuing charter in this city. It became a state chartered bank in 2006 and the name was changed to Arkansas County Bank. It merged and became a part of Southern Bancorp Bank in 2021. The bank issued $10 and $20 denomination 1902 DB/PB and 1929 T1/T2 notes. There are 13 large size notes in total in the census, but the 1902 Date Back notes are very scarce. While it's a well-circulated example, this note is one of only two Date Backs in the census, both $10 notes. Signatures of cashier J.W. Fulton and president L.A. Black. The First National Bank of Berryville, AR was chartered on June 7, 1913. It underwent several name changes from 1990 to 2011, then in 2022 became a state chartered bank and changed the name to Bank of 1889. That name relates to the fact that the bank was founded in 1889 in Berryville as the Carroll County bank before receiving the National Bank Charter in 1913. The bank is still in operation today. The bank, the only issuing charter in Berryville, issued $10 and $20 1902 DB/PB notes, $5-$20 1929 T1 notes, and $5 and $10 1929 T2 notes. There are a total of ten large size notes in the census, with this being one of only four $10 1902 PB notes listed. There is a bit of blue tint around the president's signature, I assume from the note being washed, but the PMG holder is comment-free. Signatures of assistant cashier Ruth McQuown (noted by the handwritten "a" by the printed "CASHIER"), and president D.J. West. It's not too common to see the signature of a female bank officer on a note of this period! The First National Bank of Van Buren, AR was chartered on August 13, 1904 and was liquidated in 1930. This was the only issuing charter in the city, and issued 1902 RS/DB/PB and 1929 T1 notes in denominations of $10 and $20. There are 22 large size notes in the T&P census, with this note one of ten $10 1902 PB notes listed. Signatures of cashier Dell Miller and president J.H. Butler.
