I feel like this will eventually be put into the same category as the Speared Bison nickel and Wounded Eagle dollar.

Quite possibly it might also be grouped with the Friendly Eagle dollar, Peg Leg dollar, 3.5 and 3-Legged Buffalo nickels, and so forth.

The variety seems to have been discovered in 2016, so if it's still commanding a huge premium at auction 9 years later, I would say that its desirability is pretty well cemented with variety collectors.

I'm thinking separate variety category for this coin.... If there is such a thing.

It seems to have been an intentionally modified or altered die. Unlike what you listed above. The Speared Bison nickel and Wounded Eagle dollar are just common (IMO) die gouges.

The coin was apparently discovered in 2007.

Well, an intentionally modified die would put it into the category of the re-engraved tail feathers and leaves on quarters, the many re-engraved nickels, the Wisconsin high and low leaf quarters, and so forth.

Yes, exactly! Now all we have to do is find out why were they altered or modified from the original authorized designs.

I was finally able to somehow locate and correspond Mr. Don Everhart. I was able to located an associate of his.

Mr. Everhart was very intrigued by my research and information. He was totally unaware of any modification, alteration or manipulation of his original design.
