I wouldn't be too suprised if the mint is concerned about the huge flux of metal prices. Fortunately metal prices have fallen, in particular copper and nickel. I remember doing some simple calculation last year and was shocked of how much the metal content alone was worth.

I guess Evans has never been in Rome, Italy, where everything has been rounded up to the 1 euro denomination, ignoring all euro cent denominated coins and values.

Is that what really happens in Rome?

And I wonder if the RBA would change the size of the coins, too. The current 10c coin is a bit big for the lowest denomination coin.

No, this is not what happens in Rome. In Finland they got rid of the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins, but in italy everything is as it is in every other country. Perhaps some people round up, but then what if you want to buy something for 50 cents? It gets rounded up to €1? I don't think so.

It's the pollies in Treasury who'll decide if any change is going to happen to Aussie coins, not the mint. RAM will be following instructions received from Treasury.
