This is why I only buy from sellers who offer returns. Far as I'm concerned, for sellers who don't offer returns, that's like saying they don't stand behind their product. I won't deal with it. Davenders from ebay is one coin seller that I've had bad experiences with. I had purchased several nickels that had looked much different from the listing. They had awful toning. When I went through all the jazz of returning them and all that and once it was concluded, he blocked me from purchasing from him.

I've only had a couple of issues from buying on ebay. Lost shipment or coins not up to standard. I contact the seller and so far they have taken care of it via refund or sent replacement coins. I try and stick to a few sellers that have what I'm looking for and sometimes even do a small purchase just to test out the quality especially if they are using stock photos and I know they have several items I would like to purchase over time. Although I'd prefer actual images but some of the stuff is more common so it wouldn't be practical to photograph everything. I will check feedback, negative and neutral especially as well as revised feedback amount. You'll get to see how the seller handles the feedback if they respond to it. Alot of times it's buyers not knowing what they are buying. But if I see that the items was not as advertised I will avoid the seller.

Quote:Davenders from ebay is one coin seller that I've had bad experiences with. Was that from his stock photos or the ones he lists as actual coins? I'm just curious since I've had him recommended a few times. I haven't ordered from him since shipping always puts me off if its just a couple of coins.

Quote: This is why I only buy from sellers who offer returns. Far as I'm concerned, for sellers who don't offer returns, that's like saying they don't stand behind their product. I won't deal with it. I sell inexpensive coins, and I have a no return policy. I think it cuts out entire categories of problem buyers. If you accept returns, many people don't look carefully at your pictures. You go through the complete hassle of shipping it to them, chancing ebay's inconsistent tracking, and then they might just send it back. Your coin might get lost during return mailing, and there is no guarantee that they will package it properly to avoid damage, and that they haven't put fingerprints or other damage onto the coin. Malicious buyers will buy in the hopes that the envelope tracking fails, you issue a refund, and you tell to keep the coin if it shows up—returns allow them to play that game without a downside risk. A no returns policy stops all that problem behavior. Quote: When I went through all the jazz of returning them and all that and once it was concluded, he blocked me from purchasing from him. Realistically, you can choose not to do business with him for any reason, and he can do the same. I will block impatient buyers, rude buyers, high maintenance buyers, and anyone who I think might be a headache in the future. From a seller's perspective, there are thousands of potential coin buyers on ebay. Removing a few from the pool isn't a big deal. I wouldn't take it personally.

Quote: I sell inexpensive coins, and I have a no return policy... A no returns policy stops all that problem behavior. That makes sense to me and I have to agree with your policy. For coin purchases, I have never worried about returns. I figure any problem is going to be on me and the cost for not doing my due diligence—look at all the photos, read all the descriptions, review all the feedback, rinse, repeat.

If I buy a cheap coin from a seller, and the coin is not what was advertised, I usually keep it. But when I buy very expensive ones, I check out the seller very thoroughly before the purchase, and I do make sure they take returns (just in case).

The ones that get me are the ones selling "Monster Rainbow" toned coins. They display a coin with a starburst of colors, until you get to your hands, which is flat black with minimal background color... By the way, a lot of it has to do with PCGS's "True View" misrepresentation of the coins they slab. Let me know if you'd like to see one example I have.

I buy maybe 1/2 dozen coins from ebay each year. I have had very good experiences even w/sellers who don't accept returns. I gambled once on stock photos and don't expect to do that again. Also shipping is stupid from some sellers. ebay has taken very good care of me as a buyer.

I bought a few coins from a seller, no I wont name him, and they were pretty decent, graded, coins at a fair price. Well I bought a MSD that just didn't line up with the picture at all. It appeared to me that the harshly cleaned coin had it flaws hidden by light and maybe even filters. I returned it and reported the incident on ebay and that was that. Well he contacted me in Email obviously upset with my report. He had a pretty good track record on ebay and insisted he was an honorable man, which he probably is. He also has a large presence on ebay and no doubt depends on it for his Livelihood. Well I'm not a hard man. If I had one rule as a Policeman it was to avoid if at all possible hurting a mans Livelihood and his ability to feed his kids, even if he had it coming. That meant a lot of breaks on tickets and a whole lot of passes on a whole lot of things a working man did when he messed up as long as it wasn't to serious. So I took his word for it and revised my feedback even if what I originally said was most likely true. I figured he refunded me and sounded sincere so why be petty about it ? Why hurt the guy ? I wished him well but I wont be buying from him again.

I wanted to return to this thread, specifically about the price of pre-1956 Jefferson proof nickels. Patience is really helpful in obtaining nice coins (as well as a willingness to take a few calculated risks). I just picked up this nicely toned 1954 proof nickel for about $5 on ebay. It has a few imperfections, but I think it would make a great album coin. It definitely photographs well.

A fine looking coin, BM. I'd still like to get my hands on some of the pre-1956 proof nickels one day. My only concern is with sellers constantly using stock photos. It might be better in my scenario if I was going to purchase some to actually find them by hand at some coin shops or coin shows.
