Thanks, jbuck. I've noticed my 1912 I believe is considered VF/XF, while the upgraded one for the 1912-D I bought is simply considered "Fine." This does seem to be sort of splitting hairs here, though. I'd say it's probably close enough to XF. Realistically, I'd love for all the coins in the set to be XF. But, I don't think that's entirely doable for my budget. Best I can do is try to find as many coins that I can that are in XF that I can afford or close to it. I know I certainly won't be able to afford the keys in XF

Thanks, EV. Today, I got the 1908 and 1889 in the mail. Found it kind of odd considering I also ordered the 1896 but didn't get it with the same order. They were all from the same seller. Odd. So is it just me, or does it look like the 1908 has been cleaned? The 1889 is VERY worn The 1908 has something weird going on.. I almost want to say it's toning, but I'm not sure. I don't think I'll order from this particular seller again, though

I'm not definite, but the 1908 looks cleaned to me. The hairline scratches are concerning.

Definitely does. Luckily, I didn't spend much on this coin. Came in around 6 dollars.
I don't like the fact that there wasn't anything in the listing about it being cleaned, and the pictures didn't really look like this. It was in a 2x2 in the pictures, so perhaps that is why it was hard to tell. Ah well. I'm sure at some point I can find a nicer one. Like I said, I don't think I'll be using this seller again, though.

It is a nice looking nickel regardless of the cleaning. I've bought 'details - cleaned' coins before just to keep the cost down

True. That is a good method, Dearborn.
I personally don't let a coin being cleaned bother me as much, especially if it's a more expensive coin and like you said, helps keep the cost down.
But this one doesn't look great IMO. It looks okay. I have seen some coins that are cleaned that look fantastic. I'd be upset if I paid a lot more for it, though, especially for a coin that isn't advertised as being cleaned.

Here's an example of a coin that I have that may have possibly be cleaned or polished in some way, but is quite the beautiful coin. This might even be my favorite V nickel that I have and I'm happy with the price I paid for it and the details that it has, regardless if it's been cleaned or not. I could be wrong, though.

I can forgive cleaning if the eye appeal is there.

Same, jbuck. I ordered this 1906 tonight. Doesn't look too bad IMO and the price was right. I don't think it's necessarily XF, but it's definitely better than my current 1906! Here is my current 1906, which definitely needs an upgrade One of my favorite sellers on ebay has this for 14 dollars right now. I would assume it is due to the unsightly scratch. Other then that, it's actually pretty nice. But, man... That scratch

Nice 1906.. full Liberty I'd be happy if all of mine looked like that. If I when I get around to working on mine again, that's what I'll be aiming for. Of course the key dates will be the lowest grade. Hard pass on that scratch

It is a reasonable goal to aim for. Thanks, Seamonkey. Whenever I do get the keys, I'll most likely be looking at G/VG. And yeah, definitely not purchasing the 1889. The only thing I'll say about it is that it does have nice details, though. It was "Fine" under the listing. I've used the seller to purchase some of the really nice V nickels I have, their name is Coins with a human touch. Really nice guy, too.
