No hot takes here, but a few questions.
Why are there so many similar coins on
ebay? Unless all of the coins came from the same bulk lots, that would suggest more than one die pair is involved. If so, wouldn't that suggest a hub issue, rather than a working die issue?
What is the source of the coins? Are these (and the
ebay examples) from Fulfillment Center rolls or from rolls obtained from random banks and their armored carrier suppliers? I could certainly see a large supply coins ending up at the Fulfillment Center from the same production run. (I'm thinking of the
ATB Quarters where many of the Fulfillment Center rolls had the same horrendous
Machine Doubling. Wasn't that the 2010-P Yosemite
ATB?)
The obverse area next to the circular shape is fairly heavily disturbed, and looks like it had quite a bit of die polishing. Notice the seventh (next to last) detail photo, showing a linear area of disturbance from the "E" of AMERICA to the crown. The circle immediately adjoins that area. Now look at the corresponding area of the reverse die, which would be from the "R" of DOLLAR past the right side of the bottom of the torch to where the hand joins the torch. There is also a large area of disturbance. The exact match for the circle would appear to be the area immediately to the right of the bottom "vee" of the torch, which shows a much less well defined disturbance. Here's the question: Could it suggest that this die pair struck an object in this area, affecting both dies? Maybe a finger feeder? Wouldn't a finger feeder be aluminum, though? And wouldn't this reduce die damage?
