We have a winner. Care to share how you solved the code?

Yes, inquiring minds want to know! I tried to relate this quote to the code, but got nowhere. I am still working on it though, in case this was a lucky guess.

I had centered on Emerson from your Transcentalism clue. And I knew the quote was short and concerned money (I was thinking the word "coin" instead). I gathered everything started in the middle (at the W) and circled outward and ended up at the outside of the grid with the year. There obviously was a letter step. The rest is an enigma, a mystery, a riddle, a veritable cornucopia of confusion. I enjoyed it but wanted BADLY to guess it! I tried everything I know. Like jbuck, I spent WAY to much time on this to end up where I did (at bupkis...) I am REALLY looking forward to seeing the encoding method! GREAT contest Nod!

Hi
Wow, I actually won something. I could tell you how I cracked the code but then i'd have to kill you :) No realy, sometimes codes are just a way to cover up the obvious. Without some of the clues I would of been clueless. Being a Thoreau fan I thought of him first. Living just 30 mins. down rte. 2 to walden pond. But then went with emerson. Found one his quotes and it fit the clues to a tee. Sometimes we arrive at an answer just in a different way. Keep working on the code though. I wonder what the prize is ? Thanks guy.

ok, Indian1 guessed the correct quote, it has been running long enough that I will declare him the winner. The first person to explain how the code works and write out the cleartext for the entire message, including the date will get 3 random 40% JFK halves.

I almost forgot this one!
Today should be a light day at work, so I might have more time to do some thinking.

Hi Nod2003! since Indian1 already got the quote, and its now known, could you please post the quoted words? We dont have the book over here, so cannot refer to it. From your posted quote will try a hand in reverse code disassembling. Thanks!

Hi guys, just got my internet back. Moving sucks. For all who are curious, the encoding system was such.
Start at the center and go clockwise. What you are left with is a simple letter substitution code That will translate as follows
LXVWXYZ CCHRALP DUFTENH MMOMOCW NOYENOA OOTSTSL SREMEOD
Which when written out is MONEY OFTEN COSTS TOO MUCH RALPH WALDO EMERSON MDCLX VWXYZ The error I had was that I gave the year as MDCLX which is 1660 it should have been MDCCCLX for 1860.
Thanks to all who participated. Indian1, I need you to send me a PM with your address so I can get your prize out.
