Here it is the first week in September and I haven't seen even so much as a circulating territorial quarter let alone one of the elusive '09 nickels or dimes here in Northeastern Oklahoma. I guess I just don't spend enough money or something. We use the debit card 95% of the time. I've asked at the bank and they don't have any either though.

One basic truth: You don't get circulation finds in your change when you don't get change! I've managed to get several Puerto Rico-D's and Guam-D's from circulation, and over two dozen District Of Columbia-D's (the Denver Fed apparently released a fair number of those!). I've now also spent two rolls worth of the American Samoa-D Quarters, which incidentally are lower mintage than the 2009-D Nickel ! I've put James K. Polk Dollars into parking meters and the car wash, and they are also lower mintage than the 2009-D Nickel ! American Samoa Quarter (Denver Mint) = 39,600,000 James K. Polk Dollar (Denver Mint) = 41,720,000 2009 Nickel (Denver Mint) = 46,800,000 U.S. Mint 2009 Coin Production Figures The Federal Reserve got all of the 2009-D Nickels... (and they're still locked up in there!)

At least when the mint set comes out we'll get some D nickels...

Quote: One basic truth: You don't get circulation finds in your change when you don't get change! My situation is unique and very complicated. I very rarely have money and no bank account because I can't open one. It's a long story but my girlfriend pays for all the bills from her checking account after I sign my paycheck over to her. I get some cash to spend at the coin store and that is usually all I get each payday. Things happen and the situation will be over in a few years.

I had 1 2009 P, but nothing on the D front - those probably won't trickle through for a year.

My apologies, Irishraider. I don't mean to impune on someone who can't use cash! (That's a bad irony, a coin collector who can't spend coins...) I have a co-worker in a situation where it's impractical for her to use cash (expense logging), so I save her some circulation finds.

Perhaps, since the mint is addressing a situation for collectors, they will make more business strike nickels in the future 2010 2011 etc. Maybe they are sandbagging on releasing the 2009 D because they are going to add even another run from production to even raise the mintage figures higher.
But it is possible that the 2009 P is going to be the shortest production for these modern years and stay at Philadelphia 39.84 Million The Denver mint I believe had two figures so far, maybe they are not done yet. Denver FIRST mintage figure was 39.36 Million now it is 46.80 Million. Although there will always be some available at one point in time of both since they are NOT rare. I would think getting the very best example you can find in mint state, for either mint will be worthwhile.

Quote: (That's a bad irony, a coin collector who can't spend coins...) DNA, it's the pits, lol. I hate it but not much I can do. As soon as my son graduates high school in a couple years it will all be over. Our local DHS office accepts no excuses (Not even for a son I didn't even know I had) and stole my bank account and caused several bounced debits and put me in a whirlwind of a financial fix and my bank gave me the boot. On top of that, when all this was happening I got laid off at work, permanently, lol, but I found another job 6 weeks later. I will work my way through it just as I have through all the other adversities I have encountered during my life.

You have the right attitude, Irishraider! When I went through my rough period, having to drop out of college in the 1980's due to lack of finances (Denver's then oil-based economy imploded at that time) cash was all I had. I couldn't get a credit card. Since the regional economy was slow, there were some pre-1965 90% Silver coins floating around in circulation. And Silver was worth $4 to 5 oz., so they were not being pulled as quickly as they are now. While looking for Silver coins, I'd also find Wheat Cents and the occasional Buffalo nickel. After 20+ years of pulling coins from circulation, I finally decided to become a 'coin collector'. And that's why I'm here! Thread 'Hijack' Save: The proper attitude in dealing with adversity is exactly what you need to have, regarding the 2009-D Nickel. I have now seen the 2009-D Nickels rolling out of the press (at the Denver Mint) twice, and I have gritted my teeth when I walk by the Federal Reserve branch on the 16th Street Mall...

Thanks DNA. All the best to you too my coin collecting compatriot. Now back to nickels. I've asked my dealer to let me know when he gets mint sets but I am getting one from a most gracious member here. Never thought I would see the day when I would be glad just to see 1 nickel, lol.

This is a picture I took today of the Denver Federal Reserve Branch. (by the 16th Street Mall, ten blocks from the Denver Mint) Say 'Hi' to the 2009-D Nickels, everyone!

I almost had a coronary at the coin shop today. A woman behind the counter says to another employee 'Put the 2009 Silver Eagles in there', but from across the room, I thought she said 'Put the 2009-D Nickels in there'. I ran over at Warp 9 and said 'Excuse me, did you say '2009-D Nickels'?! After she corrected me, she said 'Sorry, we don't have any 2009-D Nickels!' I said, 'That's quite alright, no one else does either!'
