I viewed some of the photos and wanted to ask, is 'toning' only colors? Or is it like any natural effect upon the coin that makes it look cool/unique/interesting? I like to collect coins that are usually in the 60s or early 70s that have that (what I think is) neat black coloring that seems to be natural but I prefer the ones that are uniform especially on both sides. I dont know what causes it but I think it looks cool and I've come across enough in different areas throughout the years to figure its a natural process and not some kind of damage done by going through some machine at someone's plant or something. :P
Just curious if I could post those here and if other people would like seeing them or if thats not really what toning is and maybe I aughta start another thread.
Thanks!

Schwanke, toning is anything other than the mints shine on a coin. The range can be very colorful to black and ugly. It's all in the eyes of the beholder as to weather it is impressive to them.

Nice coins.
It's been forever since I was on here, I figured the thread would have been archived by now! :D

Awesome thread wheatguy, glad you created it and even gladder that I found it. I have a couple toners I want to share but I am a noob at coin photography. So excuse my photo's. Here's my first toned coin photograph taken with a USB microscope camera of a 1972 Canada 1 cent. My skills and the photo do not do this coin justice.

was messing with axial lighting and took these of one of my Morgans. Not sure if the picture looks good or not since I am color blind but figured I would post it anyway. This one is graded by NGC as MS-64DPL and shooting through the slab has proven to be a challenge because of glare

Try as I may, I couldn't get the "wood grain" look to show up in the photos of my Jefferson nickel. Oh well.
