Oldephriam Valued Member United States 424 Posts	Posted 01/04/2016 10:26 pm I like Jefferson nickels because of the way they tone. I think they are the most beautiful modern US coin. Here is another picture, I found this hidden treasure just last night. It is part of the collection that I inherited from my parents. A Black Beauty? No, I don't think so. If any of you saw it in person you would see where the black toning has worn away on the edge. This still has most of the original mint luster though and it is a real highlight of this set. So you may ask what I am doing with it? I put it back into the Whitman folder where it belongs, this is part of my granddaughters collection now. Report this Post to the Staff

Alan Cutts Valued Member Australia 292 Posts	Posted 02/01/2016 02:02 am g,day et,al: what I cant reconcile in my mind is how all the pre 1920 UK silver is changing its colours like they are showing in this Tone topic, I have 100,s of UK silver denominations here in my files for over 30 years and they are all still silver coloured, none of the bronze toning etc . Numisma Pillar of the Community United States 4963 Posts	Posted 02/01/2016 02:53 am Toning is caused by sulfur and other elements reacting with the silver. Most toning will just discolor the coin, and it is fairly uncommon to find a coin with colorful or 'rainbow' toning. You may be seeing a lot of nice toners in this thread, but they represent only a small minority of silver coins. Report this Post to the Staff
