I would be a little apprehensive about placing my coin stats on a computer that my wife has access too. With the majority of marriages that end in divorce these days, I would have to give up half in a settlement. It has happened to several friends of mine, one in particular that had a collection in excess of $200,000, he had to pay half the equity of the collection to his worse half. In my situation however, when the time comes, what she doesn't know, she won't receive!

I put them in draws, jars boxes etc every couple of years I have a clean up and discover a whole bunch of stuff I had forgotten about...

Best... method... EVAR!

I just write price paid on/with the item. easiest way to do it for non-album'd items. The rest is in a spreadsheet.

More than that. After the layers get their share you might be able to keep the change.

If I were to embark on a project of writing software to help archive coins, what would you pay for such a thing? The software previously mentioned lists for $75 + tax

I was going to try EZcoin software but I haven't been able to find anyone who has used it yet. From the ads it appears quite complete and versatile.

I use Collect-a-Coin. It's free. It is a little buggy though. One needs to be very well versed in Excel to fix some of the errors. http://www.uscollectacoin.com/

I downloaded it and fixed everything back to 1900 for my version. It works for me just fine.

This software is really pretty sweet. As it is, it only tracks PDS mints, but I modified mine for the others. I really like the PivoTable report where it shows which coins you're missing - making it easy to just carry one piece of paper into a coin shop or show.

Biggest problem I have is all the stuff I have outside of my main collection, someone has to catalog it to get rid of it and that requires work and after it's identified, graded, valued, then it has to entered into something to track it.I am just to lazy.

I write my price paid on the holder for each coin so my wife can know values if I pre-decease her, and I keep a log in a notebook. Coins is a tactile thing for me, so I have not used a software program, tho I am fluent with Excell and other programs

Wow! What a variety of responses. From top of the line programs to old school. My method is simplistic, yet effective. I have log books to assign a code # to each coin before it is stored, and record the details of the coin. Each coin is wrapped in a 2x2 and stored by country, denomination, and year, regardless of the coin ID #. The coin ID# is to look up details only. Some of my collection is digitalized with some pics, others not. It would take a tremendous amount of time to completely redo my method after 25yrs of collecting. Maybe when I retire! I do, however, agree with Piffin, someone is going to get 'em when I kick off, and they should know what they have.
