Teach me something here jfransch......What is a Davingnon? The coin is obviously counterfeit. Is Davingnon a system of attributing counterfeits?

I blame today's purchase on Moe ... I stopped into a local coin shop and spotted this book. It is not the one that was recommended earlier in this post but I hope it is a good one also. Most times I don't buy things with out checking them out, but looking through it made me want it. I hope $45.00 was a good price. Does anyone else have this book. The Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars by Glen R. Peterson M.D.

The Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars by Glen R. Peterson M.D. No, not me. I'm sorry Goldrush58 I cost you money... I don't have that book. Mine is the Official "United States Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836" Fourth Edition by Al Overton's Son-in-law Donald L. Parsley. (I tried to get the 3rd Edition but they are few and far between...) Yours seems to have some really nice pictures. I might have to get that! The book I have has some picture problems. They seem more like drawings or faded pictures of the die marriages. As I've said before too, I like the pictures and variety descriptions on Coinzip.com, http://coinzip.proboards.com/index.cgi . You have to register but it's free.

I've heard of the book, but don't have a copy. Looks like it might be an interesting especially with the close up pictures.

Davignon authored a book "Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars". It is like the Overton guide only for all the known contemporary counterfeits. It came out in 1996 and caused a big surge in popularity. Fascinating reading and really fun to collect, although in the last few years they have become as expensive as the real coins. When I was acquiring mine in the late 1970's they were often given to me by coin shops where I was a regular for free or sold for 1 or 2 bucks apiece. Most dealers had one or two and it seemed no one wanted them except me.

Am I getting this book right. Are you all using the "TI/position star pointing sytem to identify the "O" number then confirming with the die markers ..
I am sure I will have to read this section a few times
