Even on coins grading Poor the chain is usually very clear. I agree authenticity is suspect on this and on any other raw chain cent. The value of even basal state examples justifies certification to confirm they are genuine. |

The thing that worries me is the neckline. On the coin in question, the neck starts close to the chin and angles back as it goes down. On the (beautiful) example coin, the neck starts farther back on the chin and goes down more vertically.

Looks good to me. The problem people are having with the neck is because they are comparing the OP coin which is an S-3 with an S-2. Same rev, different obverse and the bust was engraved into the die, it was not done from a punch. This means the heads, necklines, truncation of the bust, hair details etc are different. Whenever you are making a comparison between a coin and a known genuine and you are dealing with an early US coin you have to make sure you are comparing the same die variety.

Even on Poor examples, the chain should be lightly visible. As stated, it was the strongest device on the coin.
Authenticity on these is an absolute must. Hopefully, the OP didn't spend too much, yikes!

allrighty then, I learned something new today as I didn't know the design was engraved in the die instead of punched like I thought. I guess I should only comment on a series I am good and comfortable answering about. I would still need to see bigger and better pictures and comparing them with a known authentic of this variety before giving it an okeydoke on authenticity though

I didn't know that either (about the dies being engraved). I looked around a little. The neck line on this one does look more like the coin in question. The hair's not quite right though. I'm back to having no idea about authenticity.  |

I'm certainly no expert, just throwing out an observation for those who know more...
Doesn't the ear look wrong? The bottom of it goes fairly horizontal towards the nose instead of angling down towards the chin. Or could this too, be contributed to the die varieties that Conder101 mentioned?

My apologies for posting the wrong variety. The images I posted are of the AMERI. variety and conder101 is correct that the OP coin is not that variety.
After viewing show other images of 1793 cents, it does appear the the OP coin could be genuine. Better pictures would help much.

As it's been pointed out, this coin type is very rare, very prone to wear and widely counterfeited. That being said, my first impression (albeit from SMALL and non-detailed pictures) was the coin looks real. The wear and details seem normal for the 1793 Chain Large Cent. I hope it's real and I wish the best for you!  Please post bigger/more detailed pictures! |

The design of these 1793 flowing hair chain cents varies tremendously depending on which die was used. For those with teletrade accounts, this piece seems to use the same die as the coin in the photograph. Hence, I think it may well be genuine. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot....imagetype=j2 |
