I think I got a deal paid $702 for a EOS Rebel T2i with EF-S 18-55IS and $599 for the 100mm 2.8 macro

That's about right for the macro lens, and a *stupid* good price for the T2i. $700 is the going rate for the body only, no lens.

I hope your happy with it Richard. I think the 18MP may be a bit much. Mine's 10MP (with the 100mm lens) and I take standard coin shots on the lowest resolution setting because the highest one effects image editing speed on my box. And keep in mind that my box is a complete beast, an I7, 8 core, with 24GB of ram. Here's one of the ancients I photographed yesterday on the lowest setting.... 1936x1288 out of the camera. These 2 photos were taken from 18" away. Notice that the extreme differences in height of this ancient makes it impossible to focus all points at the same time from even a foot and a half away.

Bobby, stop down to f/13 or less (greater numerically), run it back up to full megapixels and throw enough light on it to get your exposure to 1/100 or faster at those settings. Depth of field increases with larger aperture numbers, and more pixels means more data points for the sharpening algorithm. And use the Gimp. On my pathetic 1.8Ghz box, only rotating a 12MP, 5Mb image is slow - all the rest is nearly instantaneous. And yes, your box is a beast.

My laptop is i7 with 16 gig of ram so I don't think I'll have too much trouble I also use Gimp. It handles the 35 meg raw images from my Sony without issues. It helps to have 2 gigs onboard the graphics card as well. My new home machine is only I5 but its decked out on Graphics, memory, SSHD and scores 7.1 on the windows experience index. Slightly better than my higher spec laptop.

Set up the ZoomBrowser software first, Richard. You can run the whole shoot from the keyboard. It will spoil you for anything else.
