I found "The Early Dated Coins of Europe 1234-1500" on sale and ordered it. I figured we can start look on the bay and other sites by coin type. It seems that they can be incorrectly listed since the number 4 and 7 appear differently. This ducat, from 1497 demonstrates what I am talking about: Also dates will appear as MCCCCLXXXV instead of 1485. If someone can translate the Islamic and Indian coins that would give us more to search as well. Now is the time for patience!

I saw one listing, that showed 1W99 but in parentheses it had (1499) as the correct date.

Need a ruling on a 1499. I found what I believe is a 1499 (the description does not mention date) that matches precisely a 1499 on the medievalcoinage.com and so far is within my price range. However, the dates could possibly be obscured on the coin for sale. If I get the coin and it matches the site but the date is still obscured in hand, would you count it? I do not have my book yet.

It is acceptable if the coin has a design that was only used in 1499. If not, then it would need a visible date.

Thanks for the ruling - it will help in the future (the price has jumped up in the last 2 hours so I will not be bidding on it).

I received my book over the week-end. I will spend the this week during free moments of coming up with descriptions of the coins listed in this book for 1499. There are some where the dates end with 99 and errors of 199. I bet we can find some mislabeled items on ebay and other sites. It appears we are in the time frame where patience is a must. This is was I love about coins!
