o.k. Scubu. Thank-you. Obviously, I'm not a seller, so I learned something.

hmmm.....paypal you have insurance and bank deposit well you don't so maybe the seller is offering a discount if you don't want insurance. Either way if the coin is real or not it's definitely attracting some attention.
I wander what the 1930 penny experts reckon?

All I can see from the tiny pictures...it appears to be dipped in acid.

As to why it is a fake: London Obverse die whereas an authentic one almost certainly has Indian Obverse die. The base of the lettering on the reverse is flat when it should be indented. (Try looking at this little piece I wrote some years ago http://www.thesandpit.net/index.php...n=1930_penny) As for the "found it covered in verdigris" story.... Perhaps it is true but I have heard of suspect 1923 halfpennies and 1930 pennies being buried in the back yard for a few months to make it harder to see any "alterations".

Great link Sandpit. Kudos. I have used this site many a time in learning how to pick a fake 1930 1d & also for the 1923 1/2d. Wealth of information. Just checked the link again, now over $10,000. Really, this is unbelievable. Here is another having a go; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1930-OZy...em27bb1bdd0dWonder what it will bring.

Just sold for $14,850 (Australian dollars, in USD about $16,000). Either they have a genuine 1930 English and they did OK or they are down $14,849.

Another fake hiding beneath corrosion? Is that a London obverse? The 3 also looks rather small to my eyes.

Look like a London too me. Definitely down 15k. Apart from being a fake, why would you pay nearly $15,000 for one in such poor condition.

"... why would you pay nearly $15,000 for one in such poor condition " - why would you pay nearly $15,000 for one that you had not made a hands-on examination of ?

Personally, I think it is fine to buy high grade, valuable or rare coins via the Internet. I would just make sure it is a reputable dealer / auction house. At least then you can be sure of the authenticity of the product and the photos provided are usually first class.

Paying $15,000 for a GENUINE 1930 with English reverse (horrible condition but decent pearls) is a good buy (needs a top grade curator to fix the green) as if with the normal healthy patina it would be well over $50,000. The Oztion Indian obverse coin is also above average and worth somewhere between 25 and 35,000 (if the reverse wasn't scratched then 35,000 plus). For $55,000 (if you had the money) then a gVF coin would be worth it.

Let's see: Faults? Yeah, no kidding. Dug out of a pile of dog doody where it was put last year to cover alterations? Would prolly be returned by any TPG. Private FB. $16 large. Seller willing to knock $1500+ off the price if you'll pay using a method that ebay can't enforce a refund on. Better to give up 10% than 100%. He shoulda just used red flags bordering the listing.

Reputable dealers do not list 1930 pennies on ebay
