Think I Found Something! 1904 Indian Head

danialkenny New Member United States 5 Posts	Posted 05/26/2011 03:08 am hi today my mother found a 1904 Indian Head cent, in circulation, she got it in a store as change. this is what is weird. the coin is NOT copper. it is not plated. it weighs 2.37 grams and is a silver nickleish color. its not steel, as it is not magnetic. I will post pictures tomorrow. it is definitely a minted coin though, as it does not look fake at all. any ideas what it could be and think it might be valuable? Report this Post to the Staff

danialkenny New Member United States 5 Posts	Posted 05/26/2011 1:54 pm heres a couple pics, best I can do. try saving them so you can zoom into it more. when you zoom into it alot you can see where its worn on the edges so you can tell its not a plated coin. im very curious! I rule this out based on the amount of detail in the coin. 2)Struck on a Nickel Planchet..I rule this out based on the look of the coin because it wouldn't of fit in the collar, and w/o a collar the design would flow different. 3)Odd toning, or poor alloy, perhaps too much tin or zinc.. I am leaning towards this. 4)Counterfeit souvenir...perhaps, but I don't know enough to detect this. Report this Post to the Staff

DVCollector Bedrock of the Community United States 10045 Posts	Posted 05/26/2011 4:13 pm 2.37/3.11gr is a significant loss in weight. It also could have been "pickled", where a chemical solution removed the copper in the alloy, resulting in a lighter-tone appearance. It has the look of a chemical reaction working on the surface.
