hi today my mother found a 1904 Indian Head cent, in circulation, she got it in a store as change. this is what is weird. the coin is NOT copper. it is not plated. it weighs 2.37 grams and is a silver nickleish color. its not steel, as it is not magnetic. I will post pictures tomorrow. it is definitely a minted coin though, as it does not look fake at all.

any ideas what it could be and think it might be valuable?

to CCF. We would need photos of the front and back and the edge as well. If you can measure the width that might help also. Close-up photos are a plus.

heres a couple pics, best I can do. try saving them so you can zoom into it more. when you zoom into it alot you can see where its worn on the edges so you can tell its not a plated coin.

im very curious!

Compare it to a nickel in the photo or give us a diameter.

Well it could be a few of these things,

1)Struck on a Dime Planchet... I rule this out based on the amount of detail in the coin.
2)Struck on a Nickel Planchet..I rule this out based on the look of the coin because it wouldn't of fit in the collar, and w/o a collar the design would flow different.
3)Odd toning, or poor alloy, perhaps too much tin or zinc.. I am leaning towards this.
4)Counterfeit souvenir...perhaps, but I don't know enough to detect this.
Rest in Peace

What about dipped in mercury or something similar? If I remember rightly, that gives copper coins a silvery look.

2.37/3.11gr is a significant loss in weight. It also could have been "pickled", where a chemical solution removed the copper in the alloy, resulting in a lighter-tone appearance. It has the look of a chemical reaction working on the surface.

any chance you could try cropping the extra background out of your original pics and reload them here?

2 problems with that, 1. the coin would be smaller because a cent is larger than a dime, and 2. it wouldn't be struck nearly as nice as that coin was.

I'm still betting on a chemical reaction / environmental damage.
