Thanks Vermontensium as your post and the responses make such great reading! Congratulations on your new purchase. I am so interested in the history of all of this. A couple of weeks ago I was real excited and posted my first Colonial - a 1787 Connecticut but OMG this coin is 100 years older!

I really want to read about and try to understand what day to day life was in like in 1787 and also 1681. Has anyone come across any books or articles that describe these time periods in Colonial America?

A man after my own heart. I have a few Colonial times books at home. When I get home tonight, I will get the titles for you. Great reads and explains life in Colonial times quite well. It is facsinating! I think I remember your Connec. Nice pickup!
Scoob, don't be silly ;) I enjoy ALL your posts and beautiful coins!

According to Bowers, there are only two varieties: reeded edge and plain edge. The plain edge is R3, the reeded edge is R8. So I'm guessing for the purchase price yours is plain edge! =)

Okay, I've narrowed it down to a Vlack 1-B. It has all the characteristics of this variety.
Ryan, both the Farthing and the Halfpenny have a reeded edge. If there is a plain edge variety, I have never heard of it

Oops. I wrote that backwards. The reeded edge is R3 and the plain edge is R8 AND silver. Thanks for making me double-check!

Dunno why I didn't look at Breen first. But if you got it, cool! =)

There are Farthings known in silver but no Halfpennys as far as I know. There are only a handful of silver Farthings know and I believe the last one sold for $7,500.
I would have found a way to buy that one!

Hm. According to Bowers, there are silver Halfpennies... Like I said R8, so I think that means like 2 or 3 known. And yes, they say the silver farthings are R5 and the gold one is obviously R9 =)

Cool :-)
Yeah, that gold Farthing would be incredible wouldn't it!
I believe it was a presentation piece back in the day.

Wow - but no silver halfpennies, huh?

Man, that gold one is gorgeous! And it answers my question - I was wondering how much definition there is in the face, this shows that certainly not much. What a beautiful coin though! And only that much? Dude, next time go for the gold. =)

I suspect we will see it again come up for auction. This time, forget $160,000.
Beautiful is not even the word for it!
Appears to be raw too. I would have it in a PCGS holder personally, more for protecting the soft gold.
Look at King David's face and the sea creatures!
