My step-dad spent six years of his life as a Naval Officer to pay his way through medical school. So...I guess, in a sense, it was taxpayer funded. However, he worked for it. 13 years of schooling, six of which he was also in the Navy, to become a psychiatrist is a LOT of work. Oh, and he delivered pizzas to pay for his education, too.
Reupman, no one is saying that all government is bad. Government is essential, otherwise you have anarchy. We just need LESS government. The founders you mention rebelled against similar injustices to what we are suffering today. What we are witnessing is the pissing away of the fruits of our labor. The product of our time. Our only time on this Earth.
There will come a time when good people in this country will once again rise up against tyranny. I, for one, will be on the right side of history.

Mitch, your passionate spirited posts crack me up, as I totally relate and agree in most all cases. I do disagree with one key statement, as I feel Bigfoot DNA is VERY IMPORTANT. I am the guy that likes to believe in Nessy, alien moon bases, Bigfoot, etc, just because that is the fun thing to do. Entertaining as heck if you will for me at least, as I have been watching the "Finding Bigfoot" series on Nat Geo, who by the way has sold out to the auction shows, reality scripted junk as well, lol. They even got a flea market king now, lol.... Back to my point, cryptology has its place, rof . Seriously, the coelacanth, big mouth shark, I have seen several dead chupacabra's, soon to be skunk ape, wild Asian red man, Sasquatch, yeti, so on.... And Fredd, I like the insurance idea, makes sense, but it still does not change the fact that some governments will steal from their people at the drop of a hat, whether it is 10 grand or 120 grand. In Yugoslavia in the mid 90's the gov tapped into wealthy citizen's bank accounts, and emptied them out to pay their debt and rent....

Quote: This same government bungling is why we have the FDIC as well. Banks should have to buy PRIVATE depositor insurance. Over the years, I've watched the FDIC maximum go from $10,000 to $250,000 per account, which is nothing more than an admission that money is worth 1/25th of what it used to be. Within the last year, a saw a notice that for a few years, there will be no limit to coverage. I haven't seen an explanation for that.

Good for coin values... more collectors and hoarders with an eye to the future.
Listen up youngsters... as Social Security fails as a retirement vehicle, the last 'laugh' is on the younger generation who now must compete for jobs held by old people... who now must work until age 70 (OR EVEN AGE 80... by recent estimates) before they retire.
Beam me up scotty.

Hawk will get his fair share of Social Security. As soon as he turns 118 years old.

Asymptotic convergence? Sounds like something that may or may not have happened to me one drunken night long, long ago.
SilverHawk, thanks. I too believe in UFOs, however I'm not decided on Bigfoot yet. I do live here in the Pacific NorthWest, home of the alleged Bigfoot. I've often thought of him (or them, or 'it' if 'it' exists) while hiking solo in the Olympic mountains. I worry more about mountain lions, though. At least they are verified to exist and to kill. Hell, Bigfoot could just very well be a peace lovin' alien for all I know.
Now I'm thinking we really should study his (or her, or their) DNA.
And this poopoo about the FDIC coverage having no limits makes me laugh (in a sad way, of course).
This system is totally out of control and history reveals the fate of monetary systems that have followed similar paths.
The writing is on the wall.

I'd gladly give up all rights to collect whatever Social Security may still exist if they would just stop stealing money out of my paycheck to give to someone else. Being 41, I never expect to see anything anyway. Just quit lying to me and stealing from me.

Quote: I'd gladly give up all rights to collect whatever Social Security may still exist if they would just stop stealing money out of my paycheck to give to someone else. Being 41, I never expect to see anything anyway. Just quit lying to me and stealing from me. Now, that IS asking an awful lot from the politicians. Your attitude is very common among those in the 25-45 year age group. This is fortunate since it will be the path that offers a solution to the SS funding problem. Since people your age do not expect to receive any SS money when they retire, it becomes politically possible for the government to shift the burden of saving the system onto your brawny shoulders, rather than the rickety ones of us older folks. The fact is, people in my generation planned to have SS in retirement, so our savings and investing of the past 30-40 years tends to reflect that. It is too late for a lot of us to react to the changing reality of this situation, so others who are more flexible will have to do so. The good news is that the system can be salvaged with a few simple changes. Whether or not these can be implemented is a political problem that can be solved... but will it? If I were in charge of this mess, I would increase the SS contribution to 7% for both employees and employees, remove the salary cap, and then add 1 year to the retirement age of coming generations for each 10 years that they are from age 65. Doing these things would not hugely affect any of us, yet should strengthen the system for many years to come. This would be one approach that could be used, either all or in part. I am sure that there are other ideas out there that could be discussed with the best of them implemented. The issue of the SS "trust fund" needs addressing as well. Currently, there is no trust fund, other than a bunch of special Treasury bonds that the SSA cashes in when more funds are needed. These are basically government IOUs for the SS money that is collected every month and then dumped into the general fund for immediate spending. This method does not seem to be working especially well, particularly when the government must print or borrow the money to pay off the IOUs. Not sure what would be better but there ought to be something that can be done with that money that would be better.

Ed- The gubmint recently closed a loophole on SS. If you took benefits early, let's say $10,000 a year, when you hit the "last chance" date, you could pay back the money you have gotten so far, then re-apply, and get more money per month. This was promoted as a great way to rip off the system. You had the interest-free use of a $30,000 annuity for three years, and now you'll get the maximum SS income. Sweeet! When I heard this explanation, I said ? The only way it would be vaguely practical is if you didn't need the early SS payments (otherwise why did you take them, and you had a liquid investment to put them in for 1-36 months, so you had cash to return to SS. But there's another catch. You already have $30,000 in your fat little fingers. You're gonna return it to SS in exchange for a bigger monthly check. again? If your "late retirement" check is $1000 more than your original one, it will be 30 months before they hand your money back to you. Two and a half years before you break even, not counting the interest you could have earned on the $30,000 you already had invested. If you die before those 30 months are up, you lost on the deal. Yet this kind of "advice" was given out by experts charging big bucks.

Well I get my 1st SS check the middle of this month I hope :) and since I if I amlucky enough to, I have 20 more years guess I will be OK.
BUT my SS check is very small because of my other government pension even though I worked for both one reduces the SS I get so the way I figure it I get my small check for the next three years then when I start having to pay for Medicare my SS check will dry up in about two year paying for the Medicare premiums that will keep going up for years now while they will pay less for medical costs.
Anyway I say I am glad I get what pensions I get but then I did work for them not getting anything for free just what I worked for and expected to get when the time came and some day finally came.

And depression struck after reading all this.... Now: Take the gun out of your mouth and go back to work, so that the more or less fortunate can have what they want.

When I was in high school back in the early 1970's, there were people predicting the end of Social Security and how they would never collect on it. This was repeated in the 1980's, 1990's, 2000's and so on. I've heard this story for the past 35 years and people are still collecting their Social Security benefits. Years from now they'll still be predicting the end of life as we know it and we'll still be plugging away. It's people with a political agenda who plant a seed in the minds of the others to get them to believe what they want them to. it's called demagoguery. So much pessimism. And why is there so much political talk in a coin forum anyway? I belong to several chat forums and I see people coming up with political issues that have nothing to do with the forum's main topic. It's always the same people and the same topics: predicting the collapse of society, the government is coming to get you, etc. It's nothing more than people feeding paranoia. Relax people..... you'll get up in the morning, have your coffee, live in your house, drive your car, eat out occasionally, do laundry, collect your coins. This is still a coin forum, isn't it? And regarding the OP's topic about an " alarming new commercial...", I saw a commercial that the toothpaste I was using and if I didn't but the sponsor's product my teeth would fall out. Same thing with cat litter.... the neighbors can smell the cat box stink because I wasn't using the correct cat litter. If you're alarmed at a television commercial, the ad agency did a good job and was paid well.
