Not my cup of tea. I would rather spend 6k on some old numismatic gold and silver and a bunch of 90%

I am not the biggest mint error guy either, although I do have a few very cool errors. This one is pretty awesome!

Everyone seems pretty convinced it's legit.

I'm not say that it's not, I'm no where near knowledgeable enough to know the diagnostics (especially from pics).
Are there any tell-tale signs that are jumping out at you guys to convince you?

Given the money at stake, this coin should be authenticated by a TPG.
Looking at the current bid, I'm blown away that people would shell out $$$, without seeing the coin in person.

would this have been in a bag of dimes or of dollars?

It depends on where the bag was from. If it was from a bag made by the mint, then it would have been found in a bag of dollars. If it was from a bag made by a bank or logistics company, my guess is that it might have been found in a bag of dimes so long as the diameter is that of a dime.

I totally hear what you are saying DV, I too would be very cautious of this purchase. The sellers explanation of his guarantee is pretty clear but, I would kindly ask him to confirm that in writing via a certified letter before bidding.
I just can't see this error happening by accident at the Mint in 2008.
There are Ike's struck on dime planchets. Those are insane!

And people wonder if they pull silver halves.

Big difference between spotting a half dollar with a little different silver color in a bunch of other half dollars and spotting 100,000 silver colored "golden" dollars that are also the wrong size, in a group of gold colored dollars.

In mid-January, the United States Mint's coin-wrapping contractor alerted the agency when it found some irregular James Monroe Presidential $1 Coins. The coins in question were immediately returned to the United States Mint.

Except for the dozen or so the contractor pocketed before alerting the mint.
Rest in Peace

I don't see how it could be faked. Getting a blank dime planchet would be no problem, but then you'd have to make fake dollar dies.
Rest in Peace

My reference was to the intelligence level involved.

"Oh, gee, here's something we've never seen before. Rather than check to see if they have collector value, we'll return them as defectives."

Sounds like there may be more potential goodies to be found in the mint bags of preidential dollars.
