I just got stated this month and today I found my first silver quarter. It was from 1945 and looks like it is brand new.

Berserk, great find! In what type of location did you find it?

Hi, everyone. I'm brand spankin new to MD. I have had the desire for years, but only now decided I'm gonna do it. I asked for one for my 50th bday and got $500 toward one. Been looking mostly at Whites. I want to find coins primarily, as I am a coin collector, but of course anything I find will be a thrill, especially GOLD!

I have no idea where to begin really. Was looking at Whites MXT and other models. Also, lots of used ones on ebay and craigslist. I live in Jersey, so woods, parks, beaches, and perhaps older places; Appalachian Trail is near family's house in northern NJ.

Can you all recommend which machine is the best overall for ease of use, durability, and best depth ? I don't even know what depth I would want or how long it takes for each inch of sediment on a coin or valuable to form, and thus if I want 1800's coins, how deep are they, etc....

Also, what are the essential accessories?

thanks guys

Hi Bernie, congrats on your 50th! Just hit 5-0 myself, June of this year.
I have to say, don't limit yourself to White's machine, do your online research and read reviews. I've owned high-level Whites and have been spanked by others on coins and depth. I may suggest a used mid-range detector like Minelab. I had a 10 minute learning curve on my used machine. They are silver killers, but not the greatest on gold. Excellent depth. I use Minelab Explorer. Good luck!
