Based on your description and the way it looks I would be thinking it is probably fake. If the edge is shaved it may have had hall marks etc removed, To me it looks too perfectly round and the field surfaces are too perfect. The color and even strike also makes me suspicious. the sandblasted finish seen on the enlargement removes all doubt for me.

Back in the day we had the same problem with Cuban coins of the Castro era. Funny thing was that the law prohibited buying the coins from Cuba but not if we bought them from a dealer in Canada!

Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company 25 Years Service Medal. 14k Gold, (8.04 grams in weight) made by Whithead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey as marked on the edge. At the widest point this oval medal is 22.5 mm wide. Named to John Allen who joined the company in November of 1892 meaning that this medal should have been issued in 1917-1918. The company was founded in 1866 when deadly steam boiler explosions were frequent occurrences. The obverse features an old wood burning rail road locomotive circa 1865. The company is still in business today.

As an aside, this is one of two medals that I once offered for sale during a momentary weakness. Thank God no one bought them at that time.

This was the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway "CIL" which operated from 1897-1971. Nice medals worthy of further research.

This is one of many Napoleon III satirical tokens. They can be divided into two categories; engraved on real host coins and those, like your token that are die struck. The latter exist in several sizes and some have struck loops. Your token calls Napoleon a liar and a traitor.

I just heard that Central States Numismatic Society will no longer have exhibits at their shows due to cost considerations. Several years ago they raised their dues and instituted an exhibit fee. Guess when I let my membership lapse I wasn't alone, but it is still a sad thing to watch happen.

It is interesting to see that the US required the use of tax stamps after when just ninety years before British tax stamps helped spark our own Revolutionary War.

We live in an age when checks are being phased out. It wasn't that long ago when most people did not have checking accounts. If one needed to mail a payment the local bank would write a check for the customer. Many of these bank checks had some very collectible vignettes. This was also the era of Federally required Tax Stamps on documents including checks. Here we have three different checks combining both vignettes and tax stamps. First is the German American Bank check of 1874 with a great vignette and a tax stamp as the under print on the check. Next is a German Insurance Company check of 1866 with another nice vignette on the left and a tax stamp on the right in a framed area reserved for the tax stampt. The last and worst of all from the collectors point of view is the German National Bank check of 1881 which has a great vignette on the left but no place in the design for the tax stamp so they stuck the stamp over the vignette. Apparently their only concern was to not pay the tax one minute sooner than they had to.

The German 5 mark note of 1904 P-8 is my favorite note . Recently I tried looking it up on the PMG site and found the Unc condition un-valued. I understand that this could mean they could not find any sales record for the type which could mean it is rare in unc but does not guaranty that. Any one know for sure?

I think Oertel was the best of the German medalists! A collector could have a happy life just collecting his work.

Thanks everyone.
I would guess most of these notes were redeemed but since they expired no one cared to destroy them and more than a few survived as souvenirs.

Back in old England economist Sir Thomas Gresham 1519-1579 said that 'Bad money drives out good money". At that time nearly all money was precious metal coinage. Being in coin form standardized the metals to government standards and made commercial transactions possible. That was good money. Bad money was basically inflationary when greedy rulers debased or lowered the gold or silver content of the coins. People recognized the difference in the coins quickly. They hoarded the good ones while spending only the lower value debased coins. Good coins disappeared even faster in times of war when gold and silver was replaced with copper and paper money as in the American Civil War. Ten years later when the Franco-Prussian war broke out the city of Kaiserslautern, which used Bavarian coins suddenly experienced a coin shortage that brought commerce in the city to a stand still. Silver coins vanished and with 200,000 German troops stationed in the city or passing though, the demand for coins sky-rocketed. To remedy the situation the city fathers authorized the issue of Darlehen Schein notes with the denominations of one, two and five gulden dated July 31, 1870. These notes were valid until three months after peace was declared. (A Darlehen Schein is a note issued by a state loan office or bank much like a mortgage bank.) Here we have a one gulden note that was issued to the Kammgarnspinnerei.

This is part of the Mexico local coinage series. KM listings only go up to 1830. For some reason they consistently missed this one. One of Neal Utberg's books may list it. There is also a Pradeau (spelling?) book which may list it.
