Thoughts On ICG Grading Service. Reliable Or Not?

The last post in this thread is dated January 2019 -- more than 4 years ago. I am considering the purchase of a few ICG coins. I am wondering if anyone has any significant updates about their experiences (good or bad) with coins graded by ICG. And would you recommend that I buy coins graded by ICG if they are of good value.
I am most concerned about buying graded MS coins that turn out to be "detail" coins when reviewed by another Third Party Grader (primarily PCGS / NGC).
Thank you in advance. |

I've been told that I should send valuable / high priced coins to PCGS because of the quality of their grading and PCGS-certified coins command high prices on the secondary market.
I've also been told that lower-value coins (say, up to $250 - $500) should be sent to NGC because of the quality of their grading and high grades will command high prices.
So, what type of coins should I send to ANACS and ICG? I was told that these companies are "second tier." Their grading is not always accepted as authoritative and ANACS- and ICG-graded coins command lower prices on the secondary market.
Thanks in advance. |

I was told that one way to tell if an uncirculated silver coin has been cleaned or dipped is to see if it has "cartwheels." Yet, I've seen Third Party Graded uncirculated silver coins with a satin finish or lacking in luster.
If an uncirculated silver coin has a satin/flat finish or lacks luster, is there a greater chance that it has been cleaned or dipped? |

I see many eBay auctions where buyers are asked to grade coins by themselves, based on detailed photos. I have also viewed PCGS' website, Photograde, as a guide. Here is the PCGS website -- https://www.PCGS.com/photograde.
Looking at the photographs in eBay auctions and Photograde, I am uncertain if a coin is AU or uncirculated/MS. (Specifically, I am focusing on Washington quarters) Also, I can't understand how PCGS can grade a coin as uncirculated/MS when it has faint scratches.
Question: what should I look for when trying to determine if a coin is AU or uncirculated/MS? |

I am trying to complete my Washington quarter collection. I accidentally came across a company, Mount Vernon Coin Company located in Annapolis, MD, which has several coins that I need at apparently, reasonable prices.
I have never purchased from them before. I'm curious if anyone has had any experience buying from them and what the quality of their coins are like.
Thank you in advance. |

There are a few eBay sellers who advertise that their coins come straight from bank wrapped rolls. How many bank wrapped rolls of modern pre-1964 coins can possibly still exist? It boggles my mind. |

There is an eBay seller, userid of *auctionkings* , that has numerous older gem BU coins for sale. Many of the photos show beautiful coins with "mirror" surfaces. Some auctions state that the coins are "FRESH FROM BANK ROLL!"
I purchased several lower-cost coins from this eBay seller, and was very pleased with most of my purchases as the coins were beautiful. However, I'm not a coin grading expert, so I'm wondering what type of experiences others have had with this eBay seller. Are they reputable?
Thank you in advance.

Thanks to all! I saw this1937D 3-legged buffalo coin on eBay. I know that 3-legged buffalos have been counterfeited, cleaned, etc. in the past. The seller advertised it as uncirculated.
Does it look uncirculated? And do you think it might have been cleaned or altered? |

I plan to assemble a collection of coins by purchasing them from the internet (ebay and online stores). I've been looking at photos and some coins classified as AU look uncirculated to me and vice-versa (some Uncirculated coins appear AU).
Is there a way to tell if a coin is uncirculated from an online photo? I thought scratches in the field may be a clue, but such is not the case. And what is the visual difference between a scratched coin in uncirculated condition, and an AU coin scratched because of circulation? |
