It reminds me of the 1866 Mexican peso of Maxamillion

Not in great condition - but these particular coins are relatively scarce.

I came across this story yesterday - which seems to be a clear cut example of money laundering

I started keeping a record of all these fakes that were put on the EIC and later rupees but gave up as there were so many.

Thank you very much, that's definitely a close match, though one coin has lion rampant in a square shield, while the other has it in a diamond. Perhaps N.169325 is the closer match, but great detective work!

Hi, Grateful for any help with this one. My initial thought is a German/Austrian state but I can't seem to find it.

19mm in diameter and 0.84g

Hi - any pointers for this one appreciated. It's tricky to photograph - possibly low grade billon.

Oh wow, things have got more expensive, My Pridmore was about £25 off ebay, but that was probably 20 years ago. The Stevens book was around £40 I think, off Amazon, when it was just published. The other reference was a similar amount. I'd check on Albris or Bookfinder too, sometimes you can get lucky there.

Krause (and presumably Numista) got their information from Pridmore which was published in 1980

The other reference is Stevens and Weir which was published in 2012 and may reflect updated knowledge - I know know for sure.

Both books are essential for anyone collecting this series and are not expensive. Stevens has also published a companion book called "The coins of the English East India Company Presidency series" which is an outstanding book.

There are a ton of varieties of these where things like, berry number, ribbon end, position of Y, ribbon loops etc all can come into play - depending on how exact you want to be. This particular example is probably too worn to get into the detail of everything though.

Diameter suggests Madras.

Thanks very much for that very comprehensive reply. A pity it couldn't be nailed down completely - but still a great description of what it is and from what time and place it came from.

This is a Zeno reference
https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=294906

Interestingly that source seems to attribute all these coins to the 2nd reign rather than the 1st reign attribution in the Agora Auctions example.

I'm afraid I've never seen a real Greek coin that looks like that. It seems to be some sort of modern fantasy

Hi,

I think this is another coin that is not present on Numista, though it's quite a common coin.

Umayyad (Syria and Palestine) AE fals, Dimashq, 126AH

This is the list of coins on Numista for this category - but his example doesn't appear to be there.
